We are looking at moving to Newport, South Wales next year and wondered if there are places to avoid, etc. Any help much appreciated.

Pill.
Old barn.
Duffryn estate.

As with all areas there are nice and not so nice ones but those three are the ones i would avoid.

I'd move to Cardiff!

Agree with Polly

Also Bettws.

Nice areas are Caerleon, Malpas, St Julian's, Bassaleg, Rogerstone.

Newport doesn't have a great reputation but there's lovely countryside in easy reach and good transport links.

I'd avoid Newport, full stop...

Tbh I'd be looking at the Diff or somewhere like Abergavenny...

SimonLeBonOnAndOn · 30/12/2016 20:08

Aw it's not that bad. I'm Newport born and bred.
It has got a bad reputation agreed, but there are positives.

Abergavenny is lovely but a bit dull and full of OAPs.
Cardiff is great but the nicest parts are really expensive and the rough parts are really rough.

If you choose well in Newport you'll be ok.
Although saying that I live just outside of Newport now.

I'd focus on bassaleg, rogerstone, Caerleon, Marshfield for good schools.

I recently had to spend a few hours in Newport and found it from (sorry people of Newport).

I think I'd prefer to be in a small town/village outsioutside of Newport or, as someone else suggested, Cardiff (which I like)

Ageee the city centre isn't the best, although the new Friars Walk development is an improvement.

It depends what you're moving to Newport for.
It's cheaper than Cardiff and Bristol but an easy commute to both.
