Finding Friends

Hi, I am looking for advice for a friend who I would like to help but I can't think of what to suggest...
My friend, who I work with has split up with her boyfriend, she is in her late 30's and has 2 kids 20 &16. She has a great personality, really fun and sociable but she doesn't have any friends apart from a couple of people like myself with small children who find it hard to go out in the eve regularly due to dh's work schedule.
So I am asking for suggestions of ways to find new friends to socialise with when you don't have your kids friends Mums to socialise with, or workmates (only 2 of us at work). It's just too cringey to go up to a stranger and ask them to be your mate, but equally I know she is feeling lonely. I ask her round for films and wine/coffee but it's definitely not as fun as a night on the tiles.
Any ideas?

Depends where she lives and what she's into, but she could try Spice.co.uk which organises all kinds of events and meet-ups. My town has a young WI which I've joined and met some lovely people in their 30s and 40s. She could try these maybe?

Ps I moved house recently and found things to do by googling "things to do in *new home town". Loads of stuff came up. You need to be a little brave to go along to things, but after you've done it once it gets easier!

Meet up.com is handy. You join up and find groups that do things you're interested in.
Having said that, I live in London so there's lots of groups.

My mum swears by choirs as a great way to meet other women (and men) as they are very sociable, she's made some good friends from the choir.

I used citysocializer.com a few years ago. so that might be an option if it's available in her area.
