I think it was one of those things where you don't realise how bad it looks. She probably liked the idea of covering up and not getting sunburned, as she has very fair skin. I think she thought it would just look like a wetsuit, and not look really weird and unflattering.

Going by Occam's Razor, I just assumed she wore it because she was worried about skin cancer or sun damage. I know a couple of people who've seen her in person over the years and say she has the most amazing skin. Granted she has the funds to access all sorts of cosmetic treatments but still, staying out of the sun is a key factor in keeping your skin looking good.

I thought it was a bid for media attention. Bloody worked!
