When I started my period, I was home alone and didn't know what to do. I had no idea where my mum kept the sanitary pads, and can clearly remember being in a bit of a flap.

I didn't want this to happen to my DD when she started, and I wanted to have a chat with her, so that she was prepared both emotionally and practically. I made a First Period Kit and thought that others might find it a good idea.

This is such a wonderful idea! I don't have a daughter, but I do remember what happened to me. I was a bit of a "late bloomer", so I was even more stressed out about it when it all started happening - I was in such a flap and didn't know where bits were kept. It turned out we only had tampons and now pads! Disaster! Tampons were my enemy until I hit 18ish; I never used them until after I had sex for the first time at least!
Your DD won't suffer the same way we did! xx

I made one up for DD, around the time she was learning abut them in more detail at school - in Y5. I'd already told her before that.

Hers included: starter Lillets pack (www.lil-lets.co.uk/becomingateen/Products/Starter-Pack) which includes pads and tampons; dark coloured pants; some small scented nappy sacks; small make-up bag; Calpol fastmelts (only 2 put in there for safety reasons)

DD started her periods aged 10y and in y6 so it was handy to have ready. I was glad not to have bought too many of the teen range though. Although they were good to have at the very start, within the first couple of months she needed more substantial ones.

I thought about including Calpol/Ibuprofen, but wasn't sure - good idea to put the individual sachets rather than the whole packet.

Just wow! Don't have any daughters but my two lbs are very small so maybe there's still time and I'll be lucky enough one day. Just in case I am, I have tucked this into the recesses of my mind as a must-do. It's so thoughtful, helpful and practical. I myself suffered crippling period pains as a teen and often had to be collected from school. If you were the same and there's a chance your daughter could be similarly affected, maybe pop a little note in there reminding her to call or text you if she needs collecting. No need for her to be a hero if she's bend double, especially first time round when she might just want her Mum. Just an idea x

That is a really good idea. Some girls really do suffer, don't they :(

As an aside, I'm working on an article about the use of mooncups for girls - so that might be added at a later date!

My mum made me something like this, took me to one side when I was 10 and told me about everything in it (tampons, towels, a booklet on puberty, etc).

Really helped, when my period started I wasn't scared or worried, I just went and got my box of stuff and carried on as normal. Unlike a lot of girls I knew.

That is fab, that your mum did that for you. It's amazing how moments like that stay with you for decades.

Fab idea! Need to remember this when DDs are older.

I remember waking up one morning covered in blood and feeling scared (DM didn't talk about it in those days). She just grab a spare pair of knickers and the thick Dr Whites (held up by hooks and a belt) for me. Was so uncomfortable!

Oh, the dreaded belts! They were grim, weren't they!
