Counter Offer

DH received a job offer with a pay increase and better career progression.

He went to hand in his notice but his current company made a counter offer that offered a slightly higher pay increase and significant promotion. He was asked to decide immediately despite asking for more time. On the surface, it was what he had been working towards for years so he informally said yes and was told to expect a formal offer next week.

For some time he has been trying to negotiate a new role and payrise with current company. Had they made even a small concession, he probably wouldn't have applied for the new job in the first place.

He evaluated both offers fully last night and wants to go with the new job all things considered. Now he needs to tell his current company that he is turning down the counter offer after informally accepting it.

What do you think is the best approach? What would you do?

Personally it sounds like he has made the right decision. Counter offers rarely lead to happy employees, and the majority end up leaving within a year anyway.

I don't think he needs to worry too much about declining the counter offer. He should resign as normal to his manager, explaining that whilst he thanks them etc upon reflection his reasons for leaving are still valid, and that he remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition etc. At this point it might be easier to not tell them anything about the new role, if he hasn't already. He can say that they have asked that details remain confidential, and this then closes off the conversation and awkward discussions.

They'll probably be expecting it tbh. And not giving him time to decide is rather bad practice.

I hope all goes well.
