oh right.. In the uk they say mixed race and in the usa they say bi-racial. all it means is he's not au fait with what's considered to be the correct terminology. I knew a black woman who self-identified with coloured not black. she's only 70. so I'd say she's not the only one.

it's very unfortunate as the point he makes is perfectly valid - there do seem to be far more opportunuities for black actors in the US than the UK (see Idris Elba, David Oyelowo, Chiwetel Ejiofor to name but 3).

Interesting comments on the Guardian website, some saying that whilst 'person of colour' is acceptable (by whoever makes the rules of what is acceptable), swap the words around to get 'coloured person' and that's not so much - presumably because of historical associations in the US and South Africa.

And of course all the bores are out wittering on about his background, schooling and slave-owning ancestors. FWIW I grew up near Harrow (with it's very large Asian population) and went to a private boarding school, which had a substantial number of black and Asian pupils (as well as non-British white students)- it was so mixed that it was more diverse than some of the schools near us now in inner London!

I think he always talks nineteen to the dozen and probably got tangled up meaning to use 'people of colour' which I think is used quite often in the US, and it came out as coloured. I don't for a minute think he's racist.

Ludicrous article in the Graun with someone wittering on about how he can't have met any black actors. No, I'm sure an actor on 12 Years a Slave (directed by a black director) wouldn't have, would he, you plum.

I don't know how this is possible but you can buy this for your other half for valentines day

My ignorant American brain got the giggles because I instantly thought of the stuffed sheep in Cabin Pressure. I have since learned the error of my ways.

I'll let ye into a secret. I'm from Limerick and always smile when I listen to that episode. A very small fact is that we don't have an airport, the nearest airport is Shannon which is about 13 miles away.
They are filming in Bristol today so don't think he'll be making that dinner in NYC

Well, one I would ask Benedict is, "What was the moment when you realized you could actually make a decent living from acting?" to be followed by "Have you ever wished you hadn't been so successful?"
