Going out for a cig while dd sleeps

We are house sitting for my sister, she lives in a block of flats. Dd is 4, when she is asleep if I need a cig is it ok to go down and out for one if I lock the door before hand?

Too many variables to give a definite answer. But, if you have to ask, you probably think there's some risk involved so I'll say no. Get one of those e-cig things to tide you over.

fatedtopretend · 11/07/2014 17:08

It's only that I've never stayed with just me and her before-normally we tag team! No shops nearby (don't drive), she is comfortable here, we're on the first floor, it's a wealthy apartment block rather than flats to be fair and all the neighbours are lovely.

I just don't know what the done thing is!

Is there not a balcony?

I probably wouldn't leave and go downstairs

WowserBowser · 11/07/2014 17:10

Well if it's the first floor is it much different to going out in the garden if you have a house?

WowserBowser · 11/07/2014 17:10

oh - I'm being thick. i thought ground floor.

MirandaWest · 11/07/2014 17:12

How long does it take to smoke a cigarette (I really have no idea Blush). Am presuming there is no way for your dd to leave the apartment without you realising. If it's up to about 5 minutes then I would probably do it.

SolidGoldBrass · 11/07/2014 17:12

It's no differnt to going into the garden IMO. But is the kid a good sleeper? Is there any risk of her getting out of bed and setting fire to the kitchen and/or hurling herself out of a window?

OutragedFromLeeds · 11/07/2014 17:13

I would probably just hang out the window tbh.

I think the risk is very small though. Do you have a monitor? Or could leave the window open and smoke underneath so you can hear her?

fatedtopretend · 11/07/2014 17:13

No balcony, I go out for when we're at home and it's the same distance-know it sounds silly I just aren't sure of what people would normally do in this situation. I don't smoke a lot at all-it would be one cig between her going to sleep and me going to sleep, I just really like my post meal one

Actually, I'm going to revise my answer. I think I would actually... Both my DD's are in the living room and I'm smoking in the garden and I guess it's not that different Wink

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 11/07/2014 17:15

Not that this is a definitive answer but I used to do the same sort of thing. (Proud non smoker now though ;) )

fatedtopretend · 11/07/2014 17:15

I am a very fast smoker-30 secs to get outside, 1 min cig then 30 secs back up... That makes this whole this sound very precious doesn't it?!

first floor i think i would, it would be like them being in their bedroom in a standard house wouldn't it

fatedtopretend · 11/07/2014 17:16

Can't hang out of window-strict no smoking apartments and window is opposite police station Hmm they have been to other flats before to warn them

No monitor here, could open window and hear her though-would that work Smile

flightdove · 11/07/2014 17:21

Golly no different than watering the garden, putting the washing out, bins etc.

fatedtopretend · 11/07/2014 17:23

I think I may have overthought this, she is not usually overbearingly fretted about-still my pfb though and I'd rather check that I aren't committing a terrible crime of abandonment!

It'll be fine if do is a good sleeper. I do the same with dtwins and we're on the 10th floor of a not so posh inner city block of flats! Make sure you lock the door behind you and it's no different than if you were taking out the rubbish etc...

Thanks, feel a lot less like the evil harlot smoker I am now Smile

AmazingBouncingFerret · 11/07/2014 17:59

It'll be fine.

If you were going into a garden and leaving her in her bedroom in a house you wouldn't think twice.

MirandaWest · 11/07/2014 22:46

Did you have your cigarette?

fatedtopretend · 12/07/2014 01:04

I have been for two (very bad mum). Cannot sleep, going to crack open a bottle of wine now after being good all night. She hasn't moved an inch. Think she thinks my sister is here to tell her off!
