Has my house been 'marked'? WWYD?

We have had a blue line spray painted on our front garden wall , I noticed it today (it is immediately obvious). I thought it was strange and mentioned it to DP. Next door but one neighbour has just knocked on and said she has noticed it and it has made her very uncomfortable as they were broken into a fortnight ago and she has heard of this as a tactic by criminals 'marking' properties. She wanted to let us know in case we hadn't noticed and told us she thinks we should ring 101 and tell the police. im not sure what to do about it really... I wouldn't want to waste their time and I don't know if there's anything they could actually do? WWYD?

Are there any roadworks in the vicinity...?

Joules68 · 07/04/2014 21:49

Do you have a dog?

billyokey · 07/04/2014 21:51

No roadworks anywhere near by. No dog, just two cats

I don't want to worry you, but that has been done in our area too. The Police issued a warning about it some time ago.

It may be perfectly innocent but - if this is a 'thing' where you live - the Police will very likely be aware of it. I would give 101 a ring & explain your concerns. They may be able to set your mind at rest a little or give some advice.

Beanymonster · 07/04/2014 21:51

Call 101 for advice

BertieBotts · 07/04/2014 21:52

I would call 101. It's what it's for, so you don't waste their time.

I was signed up to local emails from my previous police force and they sent round evidence of stuff like this. It is a known tactic.

3boys3dogshelp · 07/04/2014 21:52

I'd ring. Hope you're ok.

BertieBotts · 07/04/2014 21:53

Especially if your neighbour has been broken into recently.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 07/04/2014 21:54

Yes, please ring 101. I read about this the other week.

BillyBanter · 07/04/2014 21:56

Yeah, give them a call. Can you clean it off or paint over it?

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 07/04/2014 21:57

Indeed, if someone could do a link I'd be really grateful Blush

mousmous · 07/04/2014 21:57

yes 101
there are different sorts of markings so it's plausible.

vikingnc · 07/04/2014 22:00

Definitely call 101. It may just be markings for water or cable or something, but better safe than sorry.

gamerchick · 08/04/2014 00:35

yes ring the police.. it could be bloody meaning anything but means something.

They need to be kept informed of new markings that crop up and if you're neighbour was done over then I really would.

If it's nothing then it's nothing, but I wouldn't take the chance these days. If you have a pet then keep it in.

SmellyMince · 10/04/2014 00:52

Yes Ive heard this being done before, in my area it was specifically targetting homes with dogs & cats.
Please do phone 101, the local police will certainly want to know about it.

ThreeLittleWords · 10/04/2014 01:26

Can I ask why they would target a home with cats and dogs?! Confused

SmellyMince · 10/04/2014 02:18

ThreeLittleWords

I believe it was to do with bait for dogfighting. Sad

Lj8893 · 10/04/2014 02:38

Yes I've heard the same as smellymince

Please ring 101 op, your not wasting anyone's time

ThreeLittleWords · 10/04/2014 10:26

Oh my goodness, that's awful Sad There really are some awful people around.

Yes OP, please call 101 for advice.

Eastpoint · 10/04/2014 10:35

Have the waterboard been around? There are apparently codes used by contractors which show where gas mains, telephone cables etc lie. There was an article on this within the last six months in the Times.

SharpLily · 10/04/2014 10:43

Definitely call 101, that's what it's there for.

I'd also go and get some paint of my own and use it to write underneath: 'Owner with big knives and bad attitude, you little cunts'.
