what is this on my scan

I am currently 10 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child and on my scan picture you can see a baby on the left in its sack and what looks to me like another sack with something in it. could any one help me please we haven't had twins in the family for 3 generations but I cant stop thinking it could be.

Its difficult to tell exactly because it could be a section at any angle but its either your bladder or an ultrasound artefact where you get a mirroring effect of the sac. The sonographer would definately have seen a twin gestation unless they were completely untrained !

I saw something similar on my scan and asks the MW she said it was the yolk and a good sign of a healthy pregnancy I don't really know what she meant Hmm but was happy it wasn't anything worrying and confirmed not another sac. However, it did look a bit different to your scan photo - can you ask a MW?

The yolk sac is what nourishes the baby before the placenta forms.

I am not booked in for another 6 weeks it is really stressing me trying to find out what it could be. my mum said it looked like another baby lying on either its side or face down! x

A scan is a dynamic examination. The images are just a snapshot of what was looked at. You can always look back at images and see normal structures that you were not focusing on at the time of the scan. That's why the scan is the test not the examination of the images.
Every - The yolk sac is a small structure you see inside the gestation sac.

A dating scan doesn't take very long at all. The fact that the sonographer was quick means they were probably very experienced and confident in their job. Please try not to worry. I have never known a case of a missed twin pregnancy at 10 weeks in nearly 20 years practice !

the scan was supposed to be because I was dehydrated no ketones and water infection. I was told I was having a phantom pregnancy 4 months before I found out I was pregnant could it be something to do with that? x
