Play date etiquette

Do you ever bring a gift when visiting someone on a play date?

Dd has a friend at nursery. We went round for a play date a week ago, they had a lovely time playing together,

Earlier this week they came round here, and the mum had a packet of naice biscuits which she handed to me when they came in.

I'm now left wondering

  1. should I have taken a gift on the initial play date?
  2. when we go round to theirs again am I expected to bring something edible with me?

The first couple of play dates I would always bring a pack of biscuits / a few cupcakes or something. After that it is less important. Someone I know really well I wouldn't bother and they wouldn't either.
