Found fag packet in DD's (14) pocket

Dd is out at a sleepover. DH just emptied her blazer pockets to take it to the cleaners and found a packet of 10 menthol fags with 3 left. I am surprised as dd always seemed to be an anti smoker. No lighter. Slim possibility they are a friends I suppose.

What is the best way if handling this? She seems fully aware of the risks of smoking so I assume it is some peer pressure thing.

Lack of markings makes me inclined to think they are dodgy online drugs. Not necessarily recreational ones though.

Erm, I wouldn't not with an unknown substance.

I would sit DD down, explain to her in words of one syllable that I was cross, disappointed, and worried and that frankly at the moment I don't believe her. So she is grounded, no money, no fun, no phone, no wifi until she starts talking honestly. She can string it out for days or she could just talk now, her choice. Then I'd stare my fearsome impassive state until she sang all she knows.

Hmm I'd be thinking along the lines of diet pills to. But no one here can tell you, but we can give some ideas. The cigarette thing to I had a pack of ten sovereign before, my Dad found them and went ballistic, took them away and stopped giving me pocket money directly, he also told the school (he also found them in my uniform) who sent out a newsletter advising parents that some children had been found with cigs. Didn't name me but i was so embarassed I never did it again.

I think I will find out the brand of tab first that friend is alleged to have given her and if not a satisfactory answer will bring to local pharmacy.

OP, I don't think the pill you describe is a party drug.

Sounds like an illegal health/beauty pill. Aside from diet pills, and maybe tanning pills (I'm sure I've heard of those) I can't really think what else there would be on the online drugs market.

Do you have any ideas, heard her talking about friends taking anything?

I've just taken some Asda own brand Brufen - white, oval, 1.5cm long, and most definitely unmarked.

Definitely not diet or tanning - dd is slim and hates fake tan. I think it is some sort of coated tablet with the outer layer dissolved off. Dd story may be true about not being able to swallow.

Btw dd cannot swallow any tablets at all, not even vitamin capsules or half a paracetamol.

I may be playing devils advocate here, but I don't mean to be rude. But you did think prior to this, that dd hated smoking too. I wouldn't rule anything out atm because you just think 'oh, she wouldn't do that'.

The unmarked Asda tablets sound promising though. Surprised they have no markings. But I might be inclined to believe her on this count if she persists with this story.

She thinks she is too thin and hates tans. She has no debit card or means of buying online. She did tell me a while back that her friend was smoking (this type of fag) and that she told her not to when she was there. Her story is that she made her friend give them to her, zipped in inside jacket pocket and forgot. She rarely sees friend who is no longer in school (mental illness). She met her in the park on school day on that occasion a few weeks ago. We searched her bag and room as she is still out and found nothing.
Still will treat as strict liability for now and no more contact with fag friend. The friend with the tabs wants to be a doctor and is at her school.

I actually think she may be telling the truth about cis belonging to a friend.
If you were secretly smoking, you'd be paranoid, and you would NOT forget about your fags.
If you'd had them passed to you quickly by a friend to hide them from a teacher or something, you may forget and leave them there.

Tablet could be ibuprofen, I've had plenty that are unmarked. And legitimately could be used for period pain.

I have a packet of ibruprofen right here with a smooth white coating, no marks on the pills at all.

I've had plenty of unmarked painkillers, ASDA's cheap ibuprofen and paracetamol are both unmarked IIRC and also like Premier stores, their painkillers are all unmarked I think.

14 is a weird age, I was always anti-smoking and anti-drugs and yet I tried both at 14 - one spliff put me off drugs for life and one packet of cigarettes made sure I had no interest in smoking It can often be a case of 'everyone else is doing it', and I know my own parents liked to think that I 'wasn't everyone else', but the truth is, at 14 you DO want to be part of 'everyone else', no matter how independently minded you seemed before and have been since.

If she was a regular smoker, you would know, or at least have your suspicions by now. You'd have probably noticed the smell at some point. Being a teenager and not having a huge disposable income to just go out and buy more, then surely she wouldn't be forgetting about 3 cigs in a jacket pocket, she'd have been looking for them by now?

If she's trying the odd one outside the school gates at lunchtime, then a grounding and a temporary stop on pocket money might be enough of a warning shot for her to think its not worth the bother.

And thank god others have also confirmed that unmarked tabs do exist - and you haven't been carried away on a tide of hysteria about illegal or unlicensed drugs.

Thank you for all your comments. DD came home very worried and crying that we didn't believe her. Her story seemed plausible and she stuck to it. So while I will keep a closer eye, I will give her the benefit of the doubt for now. Still a stressful afternoon, easy to jump to conclusions. I have asked her not to contact the fag girl who is very manipulative and if she feels ill at school to go to the office and get them to call me - not just take stuff that her medically minded friend hands out. She thinks the pain killers may have been from the USA as the friend travels there regularly - hence the sweet coating perhaps?
