WWYD to make this the BEST 30th BIRTHDAY PARTY ever!

Hope I am posting in right place, and apologies if some cross-over with my previous thread...

I am planning a 30th birthday party for September which will be in a venue TBC (eg. social club, bar etc.) and attended by mainly late-20s friends, as well as relatives aged 20 - 60, and possibly one or two toddlers. There will be around 40-50 people.

My question is - what are your TOP TIPS, based on parties you have been to, for making it a BRILLIANT and MEMORABLE occasion? I have never organised something like this!

Is the party for you or a friend/family member?
Only asking as I have a "big" birthday this year and a party would be my idea of hell!!
I have warned oh and family that if they throw a party I will not be attending, I have developed a complex about my age and do not wish to celebrate it!

A good DJ & a cheap bar goes down well for me!
