Neighbours joined on are making a tremendous din with their decorating/DIY. and they are doing the whole house up over the next few months. DH and I appreciate that this cannot be done without noise but FFS we had 14 hours solid hours yest of drilling, banging, raised voices, scraping and you name it.

Whilst we are quite prepared to put up with noise during the day they are really taking the piss late in the evening and at night, their average stop time being between midnight and at the latest 1.30 am. I went to bed knackered at 10.30, nerves on edge but all had seem to go quite so I started to relax a bit......then at well past 11pm it started again, scrape scrape bloody scrape up the party wall or so close as to carry right through to our house. We've got two DCs, DH works full time, me part time, we're knackered and have asked them quite a few times now, very politely, if they could cut it out late at night.

Honestly, I'm a quiet person who doesn't like aggro but I am at the point of wanting to scream FOR FUCKS SAKE SHUT THE FUCK UP BEFORE I SHOVE YOUR DRILL WHERE THE SUN DOESN'T SHINE.

Try and talk to them once more, but make it clear that if it happens again, you will report them to the local authority noise nuisance team. Builders have to follow certain restrictions with regard to working hours. Whilst I realise they are not builders, it would be reasonable to expect the to at least pay some regard to the guidelines, in the interest of good neighbourliness. (Not sure that's a real word!)

Thank you Fish, I did infact speak to to Environmental Health dept who said it does sound like they are being unreasonable and advised me what steps I could take. I really wanted to avoid all that if poss and was hoping that having a neighbourly word should be enough....sadly not so far.

Try the neighbourly word again, but go to them with a proposed plan of what you consider to be reasonable eg. 9-8 on Saturdays, 9-7 on Sundays.

Also, invite them to come round and see how loud it sounds from your side - they may not realise how bad it is.

I would go in with fewer hours than you would be prepared to actually accept so that you can negotiate and go up from your lower numbers.
