Routine xrays today for my orthopaedist. Waiting, in the fetching paper gown, to be called in, I noticed the sign.

I was suggesting, If you are pregnant, and have to make the difficult decision, between completeing pregnancy or starting radiotherapy, having made that choice, looking at a picture of baby in womb every day, while you put your gown on, might be a bit hard, especially when you then have to lie very still for hours, while lots of people fiddle and move your body about, while you lie there naked. In that situation, people try to go into a calm trance, if the last image you see is that of a baby in womb, you might find it upsetting.

I'm happy for you that you have not had that life experience, but be aware not everyone is quite so fortunate.

Perhaps consider that there are all sorts of hospitals all over the UK. And Belfast City hospital has a purpose built cancer center. With it's own radiotherapy suite.

Can't you just accept the point and maybe have some sympathy towards what sounds like a horrid experience that may be very close to home.

If quote has experienced even half of what she posted then I think we can at least try and sympathise why she was understandably upset and offended.

I'm sure she knows you didn't originally intend the thread to be anything but fun and light hearted however it clearly hit home with someone and given what they pointed out, the harsh messages telling her to get a grip or stop projecting were In fact uncalled for and deliberately mean.

You could have just said "sorry if my thread upset you I didn't mean to cause any offence"

I was just gently trying to suggest that you might have a gap in your thinking, and there maybe some good reason why an anatomic correct image wasn't used, you don't have to lash out,

Just because a hospital has a specialist part of the hospital for cancer care, doesn't mean that cancer patients are exclusively treated in that space, far too many different department specialities are needed, it would be an entire hospital needed, unfortunately as you go through the process, you get around many parts of the hospital, bone density scans,heart checks, blood checks, brain scans, water pumped into your ears for balance checks, pre op checks, alsorts of bits of you get poked and prodded and tattooed.

I'm not sure why you think i have had a hard life, I would consider I have had a very privilege life, with some interesting chapters, it is fairly normal to cancer, luckily I live some where with free health care, which puts me someway ahead of most people.

I had a CT recently and was a bit at the poster CMOTDibbler described. It's a cartoon of foetus in a uterus saying "tell them I'm here, Mum", which I thought was a bit inappropriate given that if you're pregnant and needing a CT scan (or similar) there's a good chance it's something fairly serious and you may end up with the decision of whether to terminate or delay treatment, and in any case any pregnancy may be unwanted. So I think I'd prefer the stork one to that. But why not just a silhouette of a pregnant woman? Seems a bit less emotive.

On a related note, does anyone know if they can refuse to give you the scan/x-ray if you're pregnant? For example, my scan was to check if my cancer had returned, if I said I was pregnant but wanted to go ahead with the scan, could they still refuse? (It was a chest/abdo/pelvis so would definitely scan the foetus). I have no reason to ask except that I wondered about it while waiting for my scan!

GoodbyeRubyTuesday - it would depend on the clinical benefit of the scan to you. So, if there were signs that your cancer had returned, the scan would have clear benefit, the medical physicists would calculate the dose to the foetus, do a risk analysis, and then your oncologist/radiologist would talk it through with you. They would also consider if MRI/ultrasound could be used instead, or whether a more limited Ct would be OK etc.

In my previous job I was involved with radiotherapy for 3 ladies who were known to be pregnant, and they were counselled extensively so they knew the risks - and benefits for the themselves

Its just an old sign, and I think you're being a bit oversensitive OP, and if you really want to be offended, see if you can have a look at the 'call nurse' button next to many hospital ward beds.

If its quite old (I have no idea of the era), the button is labelled with a stereotypical 'saucy nurse' graphic, complete with short skirt and big boobs .

I find it worrying that all the local midwifery service letters had a stork delivering a baby as their logo. You'd rashly hope they'd be better informed
