Reasons My Kid is Crying: Enter comp to win a meal for two at Heston's The Fat Duck

For those who haven’t come across it, the hugely popular Tumblr, Reasons My Son is Crying went viral earlier this year. It all started when father Greg Pembroke posted pictures online of his three-year-old son, mid-tantrum, alongside the reason he was crying: He had broken his bit of cheese in half. Think AIBU for kids.

Within a week the original blog had featured on countless news, radio and television websites around the world. As people shared the blog, a community was born, and submissions started pouring in. In one month, the blog had received over 5 million hits – it is predicted to reach 14.5 million visits this year.

The book Reasons My Kid is Crying collects together the photos sent to Greg from parents across the globe, documenting the many, completely illogical reasons why small children cry. (‘I let him play on the grass’ . . . ‘We told him the pig says “oink”’ . . . ‘The neighbour’s dog isn’t outside’). But it is also a poignant reminder, for burned-out parents (and grandparents!) everywhere, that they’re not alone, and that not all toddler tantrums are tragedies - that it is, in fact, OK to laugh at the universal, baffling logic of toddlers! You can see a gallery from the book here:

Reasons My Kid is Crying.

We’re inviting you to send in your pics to show the irrational reasons why your child went into meltdown. Post up your pics (and captions) on this thread by 9th December and we’ll create a gallery of our favourite 10 pics. Each person who makes the shortlist will receive a copy of the book. The Editor at Boxtree will then choose a winning photo form the ten which will be announced on this thread on 11th December. The Winner will enjoy a Virgin Experience Days luxury meal out for two at Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck restaurant.

We mentioned earlier the book reminds of us AIBU for kids - for inspiration, enjoy this mumsnet classic

Oh I haven't got any pics because my DCs are all teenagers. I did take pics of them. I just have loads and it would take me til next year to find them.

But I have 2 favourite memories of crying for no actual reason.

DD cried because her nails were growing

Ds1 cried because he was sad when he put his socks on that his toes would be upset in the dark.

BooMeowson · 27/11/2013 11:43

I don't want to leave the hospital!

MrsHelsBels74 · 27/11/2013 11:53

Tantrums, I just choked on my tea at the thought of sad toes in the dark!

DS1 just cried because I was 'the coal truck' and I had to stop playing and have a wee!

I don't have a picture, but a memory that still makes me laugh (cruel mummy) is ds2 had cold feet whilst sledging in a field less than two minutes from home. I said I'd take him home leaving husband and ds1 to carry on. On the walk home (in my defence he did have warm boots, 2 pairs of socks etc) he went from 'my feet are chilly' to hysterically demanding I flag down a car, then when this didn't happen he sobbed that I should absolutely call him an ambulance as he refused to walk one step further.

Suffice to say I didn't call an ambulance, we made it home (in less than 2 minutes) into a hot bath and ds2 will never live down the drama llama label. He was not a toddler, he was over 6, and till his feet got terribly cold he's never been an entitled child!

Children don't cry for no reason, they can't articulate a complaint or have a moan so they need to cry when for adults crying is an extreme reaction. Hence, I have another photo of my son taken about 5 seconds later which shows him laughing.

Bogeyface · 27/11/2013 20:37

Wasnt quick enough with the camera but today DD (2 yrs) got amazingly angry that the yoghurt in the pot kept disappearing as she was eating it! She would eat some, notice there was less "Mummeeeeeee yoghurt gone!!!!", be calmed down and then do the same again. It has never bothered her before but is now a major issue!

Just looked and Argos dont sell Magic Yoghurt Pots Shock

perfectstorm · 28/11/2013 14:35

But children cry for reasons that are logical to them, but not to adults. They cry because they're purely instinctive. That's why it's so incongruous, and hence funny.

I have no photo of my son crying because I wouldn't let him drive a random person's shiny new BMW away. Nor him crying in the park because we weren't taking his favourite weeping willow home. Boo. Sad

Rooners · 28/11/2013 16:51

Well this is it - even if it is funny occasionally, who on earth takes a photo of a crying child? What's the point? It's crashingly insensitive to take a photo of someone crying. And at least some people feel uncomfortable looking at them.

Rooners · 28/11/2013 16:52

And I know that from previous threads regarding programmes such as you've been framed, where a lot of posters said they turn it off for the bits with upset children.

Rooners · 28/11/2013 16:54

What I am so badly trying to say is that I wouldn't want my photo taken if I was crying - for any reason - and displayed on a webpage for folks to laugh at.

So I wouldn't do that to my little boy I suppose.

I'm not trying to ruin the thread but I want people to understand what I'm saying because at the moment I think no one does.

crochetedblanket · 28/11/2013 17:49

MNHQ is there an email address for this competition?

Bogeyface · 28/11/2013 17:54

Speaking for myself Rooners I do understand what you are saying, and I would imagine everyone else does too.

I just disagree.

One of my DSs who was totally outraged that he had been given a child's portion of what he thought was baby food at a restaurant. It was funny.
