bbc news link

Some astronomers reckon it could rival the Great Comet of 1680.

Currently in Virgo. Will link on how to see it in a mo. at the moment it's heading towards the sun. If it makes it round the other side it could be a woowzer!

On the Ison webpage, it says the comet is estimated to be 3 miles in diameter. Shock That's a big snowball.

OhYouBadBadKaleds · 22/11/2013 13:01

It certainly is! Maybe it's where the Express are getting their ideas for all of this gargantuan amount of snow they keep screaming about!

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd just as we were getting all excited the Comet Ison webpage went down - other websites are measuring distance it's travelling away ... do I take it, it survived?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2013 19:16

sky news thinks it might have died :(
I know its not the best place to look for reliable news but its the latest headline I could find.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2013 19:17

comet ison website server has been made bigger.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2013 19:20

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2013 19:39

pretty good blog wish I'd realised that SOHO was keeping an eye on it.

oldsilver · 28/11/2013 19:40

We were trying desperately to find a "live" site between 6.30 and 7pm - bit late now Smile

oldsilver · 28/11/2013 19:41

It's still early though ... still behind the sun.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2013 19:45

Have you found anything that suggests the earliest that it might reappear?

MyCatIsAStupidBastard · 28/11/2013 20:11

Everything i can find was last updated at around 645, which isn't massively helpful!

MyCatIsAStupidBastard · 28/11/2013 20:12

Oh BBC says it for fried. Such a shame.

MyCatIsAStupidBastard · 28/11/2013 20:13

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2013 20:32

oldsilver · 28/11/2013 20:36

Tried looking on SOHO, they appear to be having server issues too.

Piddlepuddle · 28/11/2013 21:21

Oooh! Something's remained it seems! Latest images much more positive

Piddlepuddle · 28/11/2013 21:28

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2013 22:49

NASA thinks its gone :(

DevonCiderPunk · 28/11/2013 22:59

PiddlePuddle the link worked but my brain didn't! What was that? Was the comet the swooshy line at bottom right towards the end of the clip?

oldsilver · 28/11/2013 23:02

Beautiful picture of the sun on the picture where it should have appeared though Smile

Perihelion · 29/11/2013 08:14

Am confused. Went to bed thinking ISON was gone and now they think a wee bit of it is still going??? Really?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/11/2013 08:18

It does look like it :) hooray!! Apparently they don't think there will be enough ice left to give a lovely naked eye tail though.
