daughter leaving for uni

Hello I am a single mum and my daughter is leaving soon to join Uni in Newcastle.I am very happy for her,but in the same time I am dreading the day she will leave and I wont see for 3-4 weeks,because Newcastle is 4 hours away.I have a son,he is 17 and I get on with him but the bond with my daughter is huge and I dont know how to cope...any suggestions?

It is really really hard! I think there is a special thread on there somewhere for mutual support.

You have to trust that she is going to be fine- this is her first step into adulthood and you have to let her go. She will make loads of new friends, have a fab time away from home, make some mistakes, change and grow but ultimately become the person she is destined to be. She might ring you every day or she might hardly ring at all (which will probably be a sign that she is happy and coping and has become a mature and independent adult in your care).

Visualise the big pile of laundry that she'll bring home in about a month.

Sorry, don't know what else to suggest. We always text and email our mom a lot - even when we were students. If you're not au fait with Facebook, photo text messages, etc, then ask your kids to show you before she goes! x

Somebody once said to me that you hold on tight with open arms. She'll be fine and you will grieve for a while as she flees the nest. It's an exciting time for her and she will relish in her freedom to be self reliant. Look on it as the time when you will be able to concentrate on doing what YOU want to do. You have to let go sometimes. Good luck.

It's so hard when they make that first huge leap from your home to their first steps into adulthood.

I experienced it last year when my son left for Uni and I blogged about it quite a lot. I found blogging about it got the emotions out of me, it was really cathartic.

Just in case my worries and musings may help you here's one of my going to Uni posts

Hope you're getting used to your daughter's absence luisa60. Be proud that you brought her up brave enough to go out into the big wide world.
