DD would like to read stories or blogs by other children

Hi

My DD is 7 and has asked to type up some of the stories she writes somewhere where people outside the family can read them, so I have started her off on the blogspot site. She has also asked to read other children's stories - can anyone direct me to any similar blogs by children under about 10? I don't know where to start looking.

Have you tried Jump mag ?

It was set up by an MNer and her daughter and encourages it's readers to send in articles to be published on the site. Lots of the content will be by children around your daughters age and it tries to include stuff that is inspirational and interesting rather than pink and fluffy.

DS1 has a blog about buses here. He's 7. It might not be very interesting to your dd though!

As well as my own blog, I run a site for children who blog www.KidsBlogClub.com - there are lots of links in there to other children's blogs, check out the interview with the 10 year old who's written a book.

Thanks Joanne and tabby. She really wants to read prose fiction by kids close to her age, which Jump seems not to do much of, though I agree its a nice magazine concept. Tabby I think the buses go over her head a bit, not least because we live outside the Uk -I my littlest liked the photos of buses though, so please pass on his compliments to your DS :)I I will have a look at your links now, thanks Joanne.

I am the aforementioned MNetter who set up Jump! Mag. We don't have an awful lot of fiction written by your daughter's age group, but we'd love to feature more. If she is interested in submitting something, do let me know.

I was going to suggest Joanne's Blog Club, but she has got here before me.

Wordebite might be a bit too old for her yet. The stories are suitable for younger readers from content (ie no sex or violence) but are written by older teens.

I know of a few young bloggers who do book reviews or style blogs, but will ask around if there are others who do fiction.

Thanks MMLindor - she mainly writes in German as that's the language she goes to school in, and she finds English spelling a bit frustrating atm (she writes on paper in English happily but gets frustrated when typing it up as the spell checker points out all her errors :o ) but if she might have a chance to be published it may motivate her :) I think she'd like to read things by children her age to gauge the standard, though she hasn't actually said so! :)

We've been outside for most of the last few days due to amazing weather, so she's only had the most cursory glance at Jump magazine, and not added anything to her brand new fiction "blog" either, but I will draw her attention to Jump and Wordbite next time she is looking for something to do :) She did get Aquila magazine (in paper format from the UK), but it was a bit too old for her really and she only used to read the odd article that jumped out at her because of the pictures and motivated her to read the text, and the rest would go untouched, so I haven't renewed the subscription for now - Jump looks like a good substitute :)

Does she write her blog in German?

I'll PM you my daughter's blog - she doesn't write in German but understands it well. Maybe the two of them could link up somehow.

DD already has a "penpal" in Austria who she writes to in German via MN PM :) She had another who she wrote to in English but that one faded away :( May be she and your DD could comment on each other's blogs, and start writing to each other if they "click" that way - I would love my Dd to write more in English, as I always think "what if" we were to move back (not that its actually on the cards), would be great if my DD wrote to yours in English and yours replied in German, but I don't know whether that is really feasible - will start by showing her the blog :)

If you aren't in the UK you may not have been aware of the Radio 2 500 Words competition. It was for children 13 and under and the top fifty stories are here to both read and listen to. My two (age 10 and 7) and I loved going through them before the results were announced.
Lots of the stories are brilliant but the winning story in the 9 and under category is just awesome.

Thanks feet thats exactly what I was looking for althoughlong now she's saying she won't write on her blog because her stories aren't as good She disagreed with the place order and preferred the farting boy befriending the dragon to the clever-clever second place story (which to be honest she didn't understand til I explained )and but she appreciated the starling story. Amazing they were all written by 9the year olds!

Glad to help. Hope it doesn't really put her off as I doubt many adults could write as well as that. I agree that it's amazing that they were all 9.
