How do giveaways work?

I would like to get more readers and followers. Would a giveaway help? What would be interesting for a blog and how exactly do giveaways work?

I'm experimenting with this stuff. In true giveaway you will have quick traffic but not enough return. Of cause you will have a e.mail database but if you normal honest person you won't use it.

You may ask to subscribe to newsletter as a part of application. That might bring you some return visitors. Are you willing to do regular newspaper?

The best way I think is giveaway for comments. I.e. top commentators got something or for the best comment or something else. It's up to you.

When you decide what you are going to do you should find a prize.
