Live feed of asteroid near miss

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 07:14

Should be here with the closest approach at 7:25.

Tis a record breaking approach by an asteroid (that has been measured!) I almost (not being very awake) put hit in the title rather than near miss. Oops! It is coming within 28000 km well within the geostationary satellite belt.

So are we going to have a live mn watch? Apparently you can also see it with good binoculars as it approaches.

But....but.... If they didn't spot this "little" Russian one, its still surely too much of a coincidence that this larger one is coming straight after it? Makes me worried that there will be other unseen smaller ones hidden by the bigger one or something! An evil family of earth-destroying meteorites!

[hides under bed with tins of beans]

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 18:12

It is a rather remarkable coincidence isn't it Grin

Fortunately it would be impossible for smaller ones to hide behind this big one, partly because its not been coming straight at us like a bullseye, the orbit is curved, but also smaller asteroids would be affected by gravity less and so would have a different orbit.

Blimey at that crater.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/02/2013 18:23

Hmmm....... I don't think your explanations are going to help. I finished reading Cormac McCarthy's The Road the other night. It was the wrong book to read 2 days before a meteorite hits Russia and now this talk of a near miss.

[cries]

[pours third glass of wine]

Loughrigg · 15/02/2013 18:27

Wow! Amazing stuff!

GloriaSnow · 15/02/2013 19:26

Binoculars at the ready?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 19:26

Marshall, sadly (or maybe not sadly) the crater is not from the meteorite, goodness knows what it was doing on a Russian news program!

Not long to go now Curly!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 19:27

Binoculars ready (mind you, I almost certainly won't be able to see it as I've got such crap eyes, but I can point dd and dh in approx the right direction.

glitch · 15/02/2013 19:32

It is too cloudy to see anything here. Bit gutted.Sad

MarshaBrady · 15/02/2013 19:33

Wasn't it! What made the crater?

I told ds it was the meterorite Grin.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/02/2013 19:33

Well, still here but can't figure out whether its worth trying to look for a tiny pale streak in a huge sky or if I'll be there all night.

If someone spots it, can you update?

greenhill · 15/02/2013 19:34

I've been watching this on NASA TV with the DC.

MarshaBrady · 15/02/2013 19:36

Oh and I see it's about to happen not a past hit.

GloriaSnow · 15/02/2013 19:36

We found the right area of sky and DH and DDs went to have a look but it's too cloudy Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 19:36

Well, we all made it Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 19:39

Marshall, there's been two, the sneaky one in Russia and the near miss tonight. That crater though was a gas crater !

Should be easiest to see in about 10 mins. If you've not spotted it by 9pm, then unless you have a very very good telescope you may as well give up.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 19:43

Ok, going to go and have a look :)

OP posts:
GloriaSnow · 15/02/2013 19:45

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2013 19:45

Bastard sky :(

TheStitchWitch · 15/02/2013 19:47

Marshall the crater linked to up thread isn't actually a crater, It's a natural gas field in Turkmenistan that's been burning for over 40 years.

It's called The door to hell

TheStitchWitch · 15/02/2013 19:48

Cross posts with OYBBK :)

MarshaBrady · 15/02/2013 19:49

Thanks. I feel like I've had a gender swap you're all calling me Marshall Grin

TheStitchWitch · 15/02/2013 19:50
