Would you give personal details to someone who has called claiming to be from working tax credits?

I have just had a call from someone claiming to be from working tax credits. I was a bit confused as we don't currently claim working tax credit but child tax credit. I told him that we no longer receive working tax credit & then he asked me to confirm my full name & date of birth... I refused as I had no idea who he was. Would the tax credits phone asking for this information? Worried now!

I think you did the right thing hmrc always write to you, not call you.

crazynanna · 21/08/2012 20:44

They asked me on my initial claim to think of a password, and said they would only ever use this when I called them or verse visa.

I can't remember it though Blush

I wouldn't! If they were persistant I would ask them to put the query in writing and email if urgent or send me a letter. Without giving them either adress.

Personally i think you did the right thing

Never, ever give out personal information to anyone who cold calls you - no matter who they claim to be.

NellyJob · 21/08/2012 20:48

sounds like a scammer, I don't think they phone people.

NellyJob · 21/08/2012 20:51

weirdly I had an email saying I was due a tax rebate, and to send some personal details to claim it,might even have asked for bank account details. Most strangely, the amount they said I was owed corresponded to the amount of a rebate I had actually recently received. which made me think......perhaps HMRC are being hacked?
anyway,it's letters or nothing.

What id do is hang up & phone hmrc & speak to them. Iv never had a phone call from them. I wouldnt give them my details.

CurlyKiwiControl · 24/08/2012 21:44

They do ring people, and some offices work a twilight shift until 9pm and are expected to be on the phones until end of shift.
however if in any doubt as to idenity of anyone, never give out info, ask for a letter.

Kayoe · 25/08/2012 21:47

I can assure you that hmrc can and do call people up until 9pm Mon-Fri. If you're unsure about giving personal information, the person calling should be able to give you a hunt line number for you to call back on. Hth Smile
