Tooth out?

Aargh, I've got to go to the dentist tomorrow and I can't decide what to do. One if my top molars is 'severely damaged' and apparently needs several sessions of high root treatment. I've had one of these so far and I found the whole experience horrific. I normally have a high pain threshold but I sat in the chair shaking like a leaf with tears streaming down my face. How mortifying! The dentist said considering I'm such a 'nervous patient' I might want to consider just having the tooth out. I just wanted to know if anyone had experienced either? Wwyd? Thanks everyone

I have never had high root treatment but I have had plenty of teeth out in the dentist chair. Apart from the initial jab when they inject the area to make it numb it doesn't hurt a bit. It does make an odd crunching noise but that's about it plus a bit of pulling obviously.

Although root canal work not the most pleasant experience if you can try to cope with it then it is better to try to save the tooth.
Your dentist does not sound very sympathetic. Some dental practices offer sedation for nervous patients so might be worth looking around for a practice which can offer this.
I went through root canal work and I hate going to the dentist. I felt very apprehensive (and had lived with the pain for some time rather than go) but was treated with real kindness and was glad afterwards that I forced myself to go through with it. It was a wonderful relief to keep my tooth.
Tell yourself you can do it. You will come out the other side with it all done.
Good luck and sending hugs.

which tooth is it? how far back in your mouth? i had this a month or so sgo. mine was the very back tooth. snywsy like you i was very nervous etc. root csnsl awful so i had thr tooth taken out.

my dentist said even doing the root canal there was a high likelyhood it wouldnt work and i would need the tooth taken out anyway! so i opted to just have it taken out. took less yhan 20mins. didnt hurt, just felt him wriggling the tooth and pulling. it was odd but not painful.

i would ask your dentist if they think the root canal is likely to work. mine gave me a 30% chance of it working. i didnt see the point in going through that only to the need the tooth out anyway.

Thanks everyone! I had it out! A million times better than my original root canal! The success rate did it for me!

what did your dentist say the success rate would be? i think if various depending on what the problem is with the tooth?

but yes when i got told the success rate i just thought fuckit, take it out! and it wasnt bad at all, felt odd, but not pain and then all over and done with.

just be sure to follow the aftercare advice, no drinking through straws or smoking and wait 24hrs and then swill your mouth with salt water solution :)
