Thinking of setting up my own blog, but don't know which platform to use - I am leaning towards wordpress but does anyone recommend anything else? I'm very new to all this so any help is very welcome!

Don't know anything about tumblr but I've been using Wordpress.com for a couple of years and I love it! Not just for my own blog www.youngbyname.me but for lots of others too - for local community groups, charities and others. Still amazed that it can be so good for free - you only pay for any fancy stuff, e.g. having you're own URL without a .wordpress in it (which I did for a long time). Great online tutorials and free online help with amazingly fast response time. And no, I'm not in their pay - just reporting on my own experience!

I use Wordpress but have a Tumblr as well, where I post striking pictures and quotes etc from my main blog. It seems to have picked up a fair few followers independently (there's a very different, younger crowd on Tumblr) and they click back to my blog a LOT so it works really well!

Tumblr is very young.

I use Wordpress for my more...serious blog. I'd switched over from my old blog at Blogger because the Blogger app was wonky on my phone but the Wordpress app works much better. I also prefer the Wordpress layout personally now. More... "polished" I'd say. But I am starting a Tumblr blog now because I think it would suit what I'm using it for - mainly pics and casual stuff.

I use Wordpress.org (for use if you have and host your own domain name) but am starting to think I should use Wordpress.com as there seems to be a better choice of themes - which is odd really!

I'm using Tumblr and having great fun with it and using it to talk about lots of issues from the school playground which I've also put together in a book and recently self-published on Amazon. It's called "Talk of the Playground" and is just for fun! I think blogging is a great way to release your stresses too!

And not true. Any theme on .com should be available on .org. Just not vice versa.

Also, with .org you have complete control over customization.

Depends what you want. Tumblr is a microblogging platform, ie suitable for a picture or a short blog post. It is more visual than WP.

If you want to ramble on a bit, then WP is better.

What do you want to blog about?

borninastorm · 27/07/2012 16:42

according to teengirl Tumblr is for hipsters and not for oldies (parents) like us.
I do use Tumblr but only for showcasing my own photographs, it has nothing to do with my blog.
My mumtoteens blog is on wordpress and I find it really easy to use.

My addition +/or variation on the above is to say that Tumblr allows for 'creation' and 'curation', whereas Wordpress is all about 'creation'.

What I mean by that is because of the social and community aspect to Tumblr, you are able to 're-blog' other what other people have said or posted - which, if you struggle to sometimes find the words or are often inspired by other people's copy or images, might be the perfect thing.

Finally I'd also say that Tumblr gives you a social connection that Wordpress doesn't. Lots of people (not just the hipsters) and brands have moved to Tumblr because of this - so if you want to follow what other mums are saying, maybe you've a favourite fashion brand (they're big into Tumblr) or have a passion like running or whatever it be - there are plenty of 'people like you' using it too.

Gosh I sound like I work for Tumblr! Ha, I don't, I promise!!

I have been using Tumble for a short while now (since my last post) and have to say, find it a bit of a mix between Pinterest and Twitter. I have a Twitter account which is very rarely used and a Pinterest account which I used to be quite addicted to - as I'm quite a "visual person"... I am really liking the Tumblr format.

tigercametotea · 30/07/2012 16:33

Damn auto correct - that should have read "Tumblr " not "Tumble" Grin

Bachelormum · 02/08/2012 03:24

Hello I was on tumblr but found it a bit restrictive. I'm about to go Wordpress, which everyone raves about. X
