Wedding - evening ideas

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get married May 2014. I haven't got a massive budget, was thinking of doing ceremony and then sit down meal for everyone, but having it all later in the day so no need for evening thing and additional food.

I don't know what to do about evening entertainment. All weddings I've been to have had a disco with DJ and/or live band. This isn't really my thing and isn't my OH's thing either.

My ideas so far have been:
Have a live singer in the evening after dinner for an hour or two
Have a magician over dinner/after dinner
Board games after dinner (is that crazy?)

Any ideas? I should add I'm not adverse to having an earlier ceremony, then sit down meal and then evening buffet with additional guests either. Would mean we could invite more people.

Anyone else in a/was in a similar situation? Looking forward to hearing ideas :)

Sounds a bit like you want a cabaret, 1950's style. Which might be quite cool. Don't know how you'd go about it, though.

Assuming by live band you're thinking primarily about pop bands playing covers, how about a ceilidh? I love those. Or jazz band?

How about traditional wedding games? I am unfortunately about to go out and can't find what I'm looking for on google, but I've been to a few non-British European weddings and they have games with the wedding guests and bride/groom. Things like the couple takes a shoe from each other, one shoe in each hand, sits back-to-back then are asked questions (e.g. 'Who wears the trousers in your relationship/who made the first move?') etc. and has to raise the shoe of the person they think is responsible - very funny if they answer differently. If you don't like the attention always on you then you could get other guests to participate. If that sounds like your thing I'll try and find a link later.

Ceilidh? Great fun.

One wedding I went to had a disco in one room, and a games room in the other room. Games room had a pool table, giant connect 4, giant jenga and one or two other similar things.

Went to one years ago that had a barn dance. Was really good.

We had a ceilidh, it was brilliant. The band explained how to do all the dances, so it didn't matter if you didn't know how to do them.
