I've fucked up his bike

We had a lovely little bee bike with stabilisers on, very much a girly bike
My 5yo has just grown out of it, so Ive tried to turn it into a cars bike for my 3 yo
It's a disaster
Ive spent £30 on hammerite paint brushes and sandpaper
Another £10 on stickers from eBay (didn't check postage)
So £40 all together
I'm fetching him from nursery in 40 mins
The bike looks SHIT
It looks like I've pulled it out of a river!
I've just looked on Argos, could have got a new one for £50
Could have sold bee bike for £20
Shit shit shit

crying now>

He's too young to notice that its home-done and I'm sure he'll love it.

ThereGoesTheYear · 25/05/2012 14:31

That sounds lovely. He will NOT notice that it's hand-knitted now when he's small, but when he's older, even an old man, he'll look back at photos of him standing proudly by his hand-made bike, made with love and care by his mummy. And he'll cry. Lucky little boy.

oh dear!
Annoying, but not end of world.
Can you afford £50 for Argos one & give the failed effort to charity shop?

Thanks mistle
Have to say I'm not looking forward to dh seeing it
It was him who wanted to sell and buy ds a new bike
Unfortunetly he suggested this after I brought stickers and paint
Also I thought I'd do a better job Sad
Was going to turn dd1 bike into bagpuss bike for dd2

Thanks everyone
No carnt afford to give away the home made one
Perhaps stick it on eBay as modern art!
(yes it's that bad)

That's lovely, mistlethrush.

I'm blubbing, now.

ThereGoesTheYear · 25/05/2012 16:59

How does he like it svrider?

Magneto · 25/05/2012 17:08

Dh said sand the bike down, then spray it
with primer then buy a spray can (not the hammerite stuff) of paint anykind will do apparently. Then you can either T-cut it (no Idea what this means dh said google it) or sand it with 200-500 grit sandpaper then polish it to a shine but you don't have to do any of this t-cut or sanding stuff if you don't want to.

He used to do all this sort of stuff to his bike when he was a teenager so I'm assuming he knows what he's talking about Wink

PurplePidjin · 25/05/2012 17:09

If you haven't done the stickers yet, sand it lightly and give it a coat of car spray paint. Just take the wheels off and mask off anything else you don't want painted first.

PurplePidjin · 25/05/2012 17:11

X post with magneto's dh! T cut is paint enhancer, brings up the colour especially on older paint.

Svrider · 25/05/2012 17:30

Thanks everyone
Ds is convinced he has a new cars bike!
Dh was v. Supportive, but has named me the top gear team ie ambitious but rubbish!

I think the paint job wud have been ok, if it was painted over a knackered old bike, it just didn't look like I wanted it IYSWIM
Anyway got to go, ds needs a push!
Thanks all
