Wearing a trouser suit to a job interview

I need to buy a new suit for a job interview. I much prefer wearing trousers and know I will get more wear out of a trouser suit in the long run. However, when I last went for interviews after uni 13 years ago, my parents told me that the correct etiquette was for women to wear skirt suits to interviews.

What do you think, is this thinking outdated or still valid?

PorridgeBrain, wear what your most comfortable in. Your parents' 13 year old ideas about clothing aren't in any way relevant.

Personally I would always wear trousers, I work in a make dominated industry and it is the norm not to wear skirts. I don't think it is the norm now as long as you are smart and not casual.

Outdated, I would say, with the possible exception of a very conservative place, such as a law firm.

Eh? I look awful in skirts, never wear them. I have been interviewed in a trouser suit, and I've interviewed women who've shown up in trouser suits. It seems quite sexist to say you'd got to wear x because you're a woman. At some point could women not get a job without flashing a bit of leg? Hmm

Wear what fits you, flatters you, and looks smart.

I would wear a trouser suit as I have for every job interview I have ever had, the first being about 13 years ago...

My last job interview I bought a suit from M and S with the dress, skirt and trousers with the idea that I could decide the morning of the interview what i felt most comfortable in and if I didn't get the job I'd take whatever I din't wear back. I got the job and found out I was pregnant 3 weeks later!!! Hope you have as much luck as I did!

I have only ever worn trouser suits, to work and related interviews. Perhaps that's why I'm currently a SAHM and likely to remain one...

I actually think skirts are less professional. Kind of suggest you want to show your body off...

Good luck! Agree in this day and age trousers should be fine.
