Would you be unhappy if a stranger knocked on your door after 10.00pm?

Have a bit of a dilemma. We have bought a sofa and armchair via Ebay and are due to collect it tomorrow. It is 70 miles away and will involve two trips. No problem really.

Tonight, due to a cock-up on trains from the west country to London, dp has had to go and collect dd1 from a town that is only about 15 miles from where the sofa is.

I have emailed the sellers to see whether it would be possible to pick up some of it tonight because it would save a lot of time and petrol but they haven't replied. Dp is now wondering whether to turn up on the off-chance. What would your reaction be if you were the sellers?

would not be happy

topknob · 18/02/2012 22:25

NO !

If I were them and expecting you tomorrow I would be proper pissed off x

Cross especially after 10pm. Moving sofas even if in a garage is goingto take time and make a noise. I'd be in my pj's maybe even a bit tipsy. Kids in bed asleep.

hocuspontas · 18/02/2012 22:26

Oh shit! He's at their door now! Speak to me Mumsnetters!

I wouldn't be thrilled if it wasn't for a spontaneous collection of 2 bulky pieces of furniture! as it is... Confused

I suppose he could go there, while he's so close, & see if the house looks alive or dead. Shame you don't have a phone number. With name & address, can you find it, or are they ex-d?

hocuspontas · 18/02/2012 22:26

Aaargh! Phoning him now!!

Oh, I don't know - how much later? No later than 10.30 definitely.
I'd probably be glad it was out of the way, but embarrassed if I was in my skanky pj's.

Do they have any lights on?

hocuspontas · 18/02/2012 22:28

He's not answering. Yes, he could see someone moving by the front door.

Stuff like this has made me not allow collections from buyers! FGS stick to the arrangements already made!! They are a family at home, not a fecking shop front.

SmileItsSunny · 18/02/2012 22:29

OTOH - we went to collect bulky item from ebayer yesterday 9.30pm and he wasn't in- claimed his internet wasnt' working even though he'd replied to the message stating what time we were available to collect.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 18/02/2012 22:29

Unless they were knocking to tell me my house was on fire or to request my help in a real emergency I'd be fuming. To be honest, I probably wouldn't answer if I was on my own as I'd be scared. If DP was here I'd get him to answer but we wouldn't be happy.

JazleEd · 18/02/2012 22:30

no i wouldnt be very pleased

hocuspontas · 18/02/2012 22:31

I suppose the only reason we even thought about it was because it wouldn't bother us in the slightest. But then we don't have young children any more. Didn't think of that....

Young kids or not ( my youngest is 7) I would be scared to answer the door if I were alone..I also have a massive GSD, who barks very loudly ! I still wouldn't answer x

The fact he hasn't phoned me back either means he's been hounded down the street or has been let in. Hope it's the latter. I feel awful now. I should have asked you lot earlier.

I think it's a shame that people are afraid to open the door past 10pm!

I would be annoyed if you knocked after 10pm because I don't want to be disturbed not because I'd be scared.

Teeb · 18/02/2012 22:44

I really don't think he should. He has no business intruding on them this late at night, simply because he considered it to be convenient. I'd be mighty cross.
