Good schools or close to family and social support?

I know that the answer to this depends on your circumstances and preferences, and I ask because we're at a crossroads.

We have a few months to decide whether or not be want to move. Unfortunately, having both good schools and living on our family's doorstep isn't an option, as they in areas with good schools (for a 30 mile radius!), so if we move there, DD will go to a mediocre school at best. We see little point in moving a little bit closer to our family, as it wont affect the amount that we will see them anyway...so a half-way place would be a lose-lose option rather than 'best of both worlds' option.

I just wondered if there are any parents who have or have had the same dilemma? What did you choose? Are you happy with the decision? Is there anything you might do differently...

Family is really important to us and contributes to our overall quality of life but we feel education could prove to be more of a predictor for our daughters' quality of life in the future...

What do you think?

'Education education education' or 'it takes a village to raise a child'?

Thanks in advance for your insight and sorry for the ramble!!
