Not AIBU so much as WWYD - illegal download

A good friend has just mentioned in passing on the phone she's watched War Horse tonight at home, and how brilliant it was. But War Horse is still only legally available to watch in cinemas. I said 'but that's only just out in the cinema - we went to watch it last week as birthday treat' she replied 'oh, download off the Net of course'. AIBU to feel that she's let the side down - I truly thought she was a thoughtful person who realises that illegal downloads mean that the production people etc who slaved away to make the films/music/tv we love don't get paid properly for their effort. What would you do?

Most cinemas have cut price mid-afternoon sessions for pensioners don't they Britannia?

SaraBellumHertz · 22/01/2012 14:29

worra how does the fact that people buy legit goods on the continent and import them illegally detract from organised crime selling counterfeit goods? Neither are mutually exclusive activities and the latter accounts for far more sales than the former.

If your going to buy knock offs at least do so with the knowledge of what you are likely funding cos the chances that Kosovan Kev is running the enterprise for his own personal gain is unlikely.

TheDetective · 22/01/2012 14:59

I won't admit that I am sat here watching Johnny English Reborn right now then?! We did pay to watch it at the cinema when it was released!

DP does all the downloading in this house. He downloads on his computer, and then instead of putting them on disks, just plays them through his computer using the xbox connected to the tv. All very complicated for me!

We do go to the Cinema, to see all the big releases that we want to - the experience is far better than watching on the TV. We buy DVD's of films we loved, such as Harry Potter, Twilight, etc. But some times, there is nothing on TV, its late at night, so downloading a film keeps us entertained.

Most of the stuff we download are of DVD's from years ago, and harder to obtain. I prefer to buy a DVD for the quality, but only if it is something I really want. A lot of films we watch are just to pass a sunday afternoon, or a week day night, which I'm not too bothered about the 'experience' as such.

Don't see anything wrong with it. We don't get everything for free!

TheDetective · 22/01/2012 15:00

Oh, and as far as I know DP isn't funding terrorists or owt. :D

redlac · 22/01/2012 15:04

The copy of warhorse I watched was excellent quality and not from a crappy wee camera filming the cinema screen.

BrightnessFalls · 22/01/2012 15:14

Was it one of those For your Consideration copies? I love award season

DaenerysTargaryen · 22/01/2012 15:16

the copy of warhorse i've seen isn't a cam either, its a rip from something

SaraBellumHertz · 22/01/2012 15:17

thedetective that is exactly why people have distinguished between downloading and copying .

TheDetective · 22/01/2012 15:26

What do you mean Sara?

redlac · 22/01/2012 15:35

Yes it was For Your Consideration!

I considered it and found it more enjoyable than I thought I would and enjoyed the brief part Tony Keeble had in it :)

SaraBellumHertz · 22/01/2012 15:41

Was in reference to your comment that your DH is not funding terrorists.

I think most people are aware that a majority of knock of DVD's fund organised crime, but draw the distinction between buying knock of DVD' and illegally downloading material because the latter generally doesn't.

I wasn't sure whether your comment was facetious or if you thought someone had suggested downloading was linked to terrorism.

TheDetective · 22/01/2012 15:43

I was making a joke Sara :)

marshmallowpies · 22/01/2012 15:46

I don't download movies and when I come across friends that do, I usually go for the disdainful raised eyebrow/change subject approach. They know I don't approve, I know they aren't going to stop doing it just cause I don't approve and we leave it at that.

SaraBellumHertz · 22/01/2012 15:47

Ah ok Smile

Thought you were taking the piss Blush

BrightnessFalls · 22/01/2012 16:41

Redlac, have you considered the new George Clooney film yet?

redlac · 22/01/2012 16:59

No but I'll go and look for it now. Thanks brightnessfalls

mathanxiety · 22/01/2012 17:13

How may people are happy to buy Murdoch media products that are, on the surface anyway, perfectly legit? Do you really have any idea what that money is funding?

OnlyANinja · 22/01/2012 17:49

Does Murdoch own The Times? I give them money. I don't give anyone money for illegal/copied/ripped/downloaded TV though.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 22/01/2012 19:28

OP, so your gripe with the cinema for charging too much for snacks is all right, and allows you to break the rules.

But yet....

mathanxiety · 22/01/2012 19:31

Murdoch-funded goodness-knows-what as opposed to the alleged funding of terrorism by buying from Kosovan Kev.

Illegal downloads of tv or films obviously don't involve money changing hands.

BrightnessFalls · 22/01/2012 21:17

Please consider a large box of tissues and a large glass of red when you do watch it redlac. I really enjoyed it.

yellowraincoat · 24/01/2012 07:45

It always amazes me that people get hand-wringy over the Murdochs. Do you think the owners of other papers are all off protesting against child poverty?

You only worry about funding the Murdochs because they've been in the paper recently. The rest of them (with the possible exception of the Guardian although they did avoid tax last year) are just as bad.

AmberLeaf · 24/01/2012 08:47

I have bought pirate dvds and probably will again.

Cinemas are too expensive and I like being able to re watch [well the kids do].

Bunbaker · 24/01/2012 20:17

Unfortunately buying pirate DVD's puts the price up of legitimate DVD's/going to the cinema for the rest of us - they have to recoup their losses. Just like shop lifters mean that shops have to increase their prices to make up for the loss of profit on stolen goods. I find that a great many things are too expensive for me to enjoy, but that doesn't mean that I will buy knocked off/pirate goods and support crime in the process.

What you are saying is that it is OK for you to support crime while the rest of us pay for it.

AmberLeaf · 24/01/2012 20:21

Thats bull.

Do you really believe if all piracy stopped tomorrow the price of dvds and cinema tickets would go down?
