Not AIBU so much as WWYD - illegal download

A good friend has just mentioned in passing on the phone she's watched War Horse tonight at home, and how brilliant it was. But War Horse is still only legally available to watch in cinemas. I said 'but that's only just out in the cinema - we went to watch it last week as birthday treat' she replied 'oh, download off the Net of course'. AIBU to feel that she's let the side down - I truly thought she was a thoughtful person who realises that illegal downloads mean that the production people etc who slaved away to make the films/music/tv we love don't get paid properly for their effort. What would you do?

Mathanxiety, I suspect the porn industry has a lot to hide, hence the quiet about free online porn. Sex can so easily be used to exploit women as it is, and I think, seeing as the industry does just that, the last thing they'd want would be the government probing deeper into the porn industry, and imposing more restrictions. Not sure if any of the FSWR regulars can clear this up.

Id ask to borrow it

And thre production people who 'slave away' get paid nicely, as do the actors who get £millions so I wouldnt worry about them too much

Gribble · 22/01/2012 11:47

Oh never mind, just read this:

"And I took extreme pleasure in smuggling in our own bottled water and large bag of sweeties"

Which renders any point you may have had, moot.

I will download the odd film if i really want to see it. But not often as i dont have the time really. But if i didnt download it i would neither go to the cinema (rip off)or buy the dvd so would just wait for it to come on terrestrial tv (dont have movie channels) so no one is missing out on anything in my case.

WorraLiberty · 22/01/2012 12:31

Ahh the old funding terrorism thing.

Yes, that was something used in the 80's to try to prevent people buying cheap fags and tobacco.

Of course it was never pointed out that loads of independent people would take a transit van over to France and stock up...then pull up outside the pubs and sell them.

The same as now, it's not going to be pointed out that the likes of Kosovan Kev and many others, will buy a bulk load of blank discs from Tesco and download straight from the internet...then bugger off down the market to sell them.

Yes, sometimes these things do fund all sorts of nasty things but they're also a bit of extra dosh for a student or someone trying to top up their income.

Boysrstupid · 22/01/2012 12:50

Lovin Kosovan Kev Worra Grin It's good old knock off Nigel round here.

How I wish I had the technological know how to do it... I'd be Luckydip L**

Sandalwood · 22/01/2012 13:04

I love that "slaved away" equals 3 weeks of carpentry then waiting around for months.

WorraLiberty · 22/01/2012 13:08

CuntWorm · 22/01/2012 13:11

DilysPrice · 22/01/2012 13:25

I think that the people who are claiming that people in the creative industries don't work hard so can't complain about having their output nicked should go to the woods outside Cardiff tomorrow night where a load of people are going to be freezing their tits off until 5am and working crazy deadlines spending my licence fee to make sure Small gets a new series of Doctor Who next year. If some theiving little scrote in New Zealand wants to download it without paying then I, as the owner, am not ok with that.

redlac · 22/01/2012 13:30

I would stop downloading stuff it we didn't have to wait so long to see stuff from American. In this digital age it's fucking ridiculous that ivewatched the whole season of Dexter and it's not even scheduled to appear on British tv until September. I didn't download the last season of Lost because it was on Sky the night or so after it had been on in America.

I still do go to the cinema if it's something I really want to see (roll on March when Hunger Games is released)

drippyVaJjandVagBean · 22/01/2012 13:33

We have Polish Pete over here.

I really cannot see the issue.

I haven't paid for a cd for about 9yrs, whether its limewire or the likes or ripping friends purchases.

TotemPole · 22/01/2012 13:34

What's the difference between them downloading it and watching on a free to air channel?

redlac · 22/01/2012 13:35

totem about a year and a half difference

TotemPole · 22/01/2012 13:39

redlac, a lot of people who download US TV shows have the same issue. It isn't about avoiding paying for the programmes, it's about being kept waiting when there's no need for it.

TotemPole · 22/01/2012 13:41

redlac, sorry my other post was to dilysprice about people downloading Doctor Who in NZ. I don't see the difference between them downloading DW or watching on the TV when it gets to NZ. Either way it doesn't take anything away from the people who make the programmes.

pigletmania · 22/01/2012 13:42

Absolutely nothing. You obviously have issues if that's all you have to worry about. Bit bored this Sunday are we!

BrightnessFalls · 22/01/2012 13:53

I agree with tv programmes. It doesnt feel wrong to watch Damages when it has already aired in America. It doesnt feel like pinching when I dont know when or, if its ever going to be shown here.

The trouble with the films is that the quality is shite. Ive told French Pete I wont be buying anymore from him.

OnlyANinja · 22/01/2012 13:54

I'd think she was an idiot for watching a filmed-in-the-cinema-on-a-crappy-little-camera film.

If you're desperate to see the newest thing, go to the cinema.

If you just want a film to watch, download something that has been ripped from a DVD, the quality is much better.

OnlyANinja · 22/01/2012 13:58

I have spent quite a bit of money in the past buying DVD boxsets of TV shows that I watched for free.

Does it matter if I watched them for free on TV at the time they were broadcast? Or if I videoed them with an old-fashioned VCR? Or if I recorded them with my clever digital recording box? Or if I borrowed the recorded-from-TV video from a friend? (did a lot of that in school when some friends had Sky and others didn't) Or if I borrowed the bought DVD from a friend? Or if I got it from the internet?

What does it matter how I first came across it? I've been exposed to the art and decided that it is worth spending money to own it.

(then again I am a bonkers person who actually subscribes to The Times because I want to give money to my favourite columnists)

RuleBritannia · 22/01/2012 14:02

Don't know what the fuss is about. A friend asked me to go to the cinema in Esher with her last year to see The King's Speech (pre-Oscar ceremony) and it was a good film but cost £7.50 to get in (booked in advance). For pensioners, that's a lot of money. The last previous time I went to the cinema was to see Jaws so that tells you something. I have better things to do with my time.

Anyway, these films always come to the television, don't they? Nothing is so 'wonderful' that we can't wait for it! I'd rather have British films, anyway instead of all the American films where they cannot talk to one another. They are always shouting.

Bunbaker · 22/01/2012 14:15

"But I'll still be buying my 3 for £10 DVD from Kosovan Kev down the market"

And help to fund all sorts of illegal and unethical criminal activity?

I wouldn't say anything, but I don't buy or download illegally acquired films and music. Buying illegal films/music often funds terrorism/drugs/people trafficking/arms dealinh/money laundering etc. If you download illegally there is also a high risk of downloading a virus.

I do go to the cinema occasionally, but we have a little cinema in the local market town and it doesn't cost and arm and a leg to go, plus I like to support local businesses.

Gribble · 22/01/2012 14:22

Bunbakers right people - make sure you've got good AV software if you download off the internet
