Someone is using my normal MN user name on Facebook as part of a closed MN group and it's not me. WWYD?

OK WWYD, not AIBU. After buttongate yesterday, I can't be arsed for a fight.

Anyway, during the great Facebook Like debate, I thought I'd have a little look around the internet to see how MNers interact on FB, just to understand the dynamics a bit. And I came across a closed FB group, but you could see the IDs of the members. And I discovered that somebody was called: FirstName MardyBra.

I was rather bemused, and probably made a few faces at my computer like these: Shock Confused Hmm. Now I know in the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal, and there is certainly no copyright on MN nicknames, but she could be posting all sorts of shite, people might think it's me and it could affect my interactions with other MNers. WWYD?

You don't own the copyright

It's irritating I suppose, but you can't do anything

and what "closed" FB group lists it's members ?

TheRuderBarracuda · 17/12/2011 17:32

Can you join as "I am the REAL MardyBra"?

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 17:33

I agree - I did say in the OP that there is no copyright on names. How would you feel if someone was out there called Jane AnyFucker?

Yes, it's odd. It's a closed group - you can't see the posts, but you can see members.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 17/12/2011 17:35

Its kind of odd to use someone else's MN name in a MN group I guess.

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 17:35

I suppose it's flattering in a way. Does she know she's associating herself with a frumpy middle-aged woman? She looks quite young in her profile photo (shot from the back) with young DCs. Mine are way past the age when you had to wipe their arses.

OP posts:
AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 17/12/2011 17:35

I would be irritated

And maybe flattered ?

or feel sorry for them that they couldn't think of their own original name ?

not much you can do though, I presume the closed group cannot be joined unless you are invited ?

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/12/2011 17:37

do you think she's pretending to be you? That would concern me if so . . .

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 17/12/2011 17:37

does she know of your existence ?

possibly not

in which case, great minds think alike

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 17:38

"does she know of your existence ?

possibly not

in which case, great minds think alike"

It's a possibility, but it's a relatively unusual user name.

Closed is not the same as private or secret. A private group won't even show up in search. A closed group just means you have to be invited to be part of it, but anyone can view it's members.

I know this because I am a member of a private group and if you search for it, if not a member, you can't even find it. But you can find various MN groups that are invitation only, but not private, IYSWIM?

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 17/12/2011 17:40

yeah, it is

perhaps she saw yours and nabbed it

cahhh Xmas Smile

JaneBirkin · 17/12/2011 17:41

I think I might message her. and ask why she was using my name.

Or I'd apply to join the group, or send a note to the person in charge of the group, or something? I'd want to know.

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 17:43

I've set up a Facebook profile as Mardy Bra and applied to join the group. Waiting to see what happens. They might think I'm the imposter.

OP posts:
AsinineLadiesDancing · 17/12/2011 17:44

You can't do anything, but I doubt it's a coincidence.

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 18:25

The more I think about, the more weird it feels. Why would someone want to link themselves to a complete stranger who mainly posts trivial drivel and the odd ill-thought through rant?

And put pictures of their DCs on the profile.

OP posts:
AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 17/12/2011 19:15

I doubt there are evil intentions

rabbid · 17/12/2011 19:22

of course it's freaky! i would be very annoyed

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 18/12/2011 01:02

AnyFucker - I agree that it's not likely that there are evil intentions. But rabbid I also find it a bit freaky.

I'm also realising why people don't use WWYD, because there are very few replies.

Ok I've had a pm from a MNer I "know", presumably a member of this group. So hopefully this will be sorted out.

JaneBirkin · 18/12/2011 08:41

Ooh. Let us know! We are very nosey interested Xmas Smile I hope it gets sorted.

tsc, yes Xmas Smile

MardyBra · 18/12/2011 17:07

Back to my usual user name now - feeling protective.

Well I sent a pm back to the MNer who had pm'd me, saying that I'm definitely not the Firstname MardyBra they'd all befriended on Facebook. It was late and I'd had a couple of Wines so oddly I felt the need to say how she was younger and slimmer than me, but that I have better hair. Hmm at self.

Not heard anything back.

crazycrackernanna · 18/12/2011 18:16

Apparently there is a crazynanna on Ebay who sells buttons Hmm

And no fecking comments about GN
