Suddenly fielding tonnes of spam - what filter do you use?

I don't know whether it's a good thing that more people are spamming me, I'd like to think it's because there's generally more traffic coming to my site but anyway, starting to get a bit annoying now. What do you use and does it work? Someone mentioned akismet, is that a good'un?

Also, for those who use twitter, I'm getting a few people with the words 'porn' 'sexy' and 'very best vouchers' in their urls following me. I'm assuming they're not interested in my return to music, how do I stop them following me?

Bump for the techy mob- sounds a pain!

Bexxia · 07/12/2011 14:07

I use akismet, it seems to do the job at catching spam. I do go through the spam every couple of days to make sure nothing genuine has got caught, but that's only happened once.

Not a lot you can do to stop the twitter spammers. Just report them for spam as soon as you see them, twitter is pretty fast at suspending dodgy accounts.

vouch for akismet too, seems the only comments we get are spam and it catches it all

Sorry for slow response - lots of office time and no MN time.

Will check out Akismet.

Re twitter, I've just blocked those particular followers, assuming that's the right thing to do...

If you report the twitter followers as spam, it will automatically block them as well. Kill two birds with one stone and all. Grin

fiddlerintheloft · 08/12/2011 09:56

thanks Bexxia - will do that next time

Also agree with Askimet. And do block and report Twitter Spam. They are very good about suspending accounts that Spam Twitter feeds.
