When you put video footage on your blog - do you always upload it to youtube first?

Or vimeo, or something like that? Was wondering if there was a way to just upload your own video file straight into a post but it hasn't worked so far for me and looking at other people's sites, they mostly seem to upload it to youtube then link to it? What do you do? Thanks, bloggers

Are you on Blogger or Wordpress. I know you can upload direct to Blogger but it's a bit glitchy - I'm sure WP have a similar facility - the icon on the dashboard usually looks like a clapperboard or a snippet of film strip.

People probably upload to YouTube first so that their own channel benefits from the "views" rather than the blog host. Plus it can also be embedded elsewhere too.

thanks typecast. I'm on Wordpress. I've tried the icon that looks like a snippet of film strip but thus far it hasn't worked - well actually some people seem to have been able to open the files and others don't ? and I couldn't get a freeze frame/play button embedded in my post like you do when you embed a youtube file. Wondering if perhaps it's because the file was in the wrong format or something (I work on a mac).

I just have one video on my site, but I uploaded it on Youtube first. I found Blogger quite glitchy and it would act up everytime everytime I wanted to modify it.

If you are worried about all and sundry seeing it on Youtube (which I am assuming you are not), then they have a privacy setting, where only people who know of the link or have been invited can see it. I have my account on Youtube and around five videos on it with varying degrees of privacy.

Hope this helps.

On WP.com you have to pay extra to upload video straight to the blog, but if you're going to upload a lot, it's worth having a youtube channel anyway, as it's one more way of people being able to find you Smile

thanks both. Sounds like youtube it is then.

ScatCat - that's a v good tip about the privacy settings, hadn't thought of that.
