curtain safety advice needed

february1970 · 03/11/2011 12:31

I have a very active, rolling 8 month old and concerned about safety of blinds and curtains after recent press.

I have curtains that are opened and closed with a pulley system that is fixed to the wall at the top and bottom. Is this safe? Is there a safer alternative? What do other readers have?

Thank you!

Presumably you are worried about DC getting tangled in the pulley system? If this is the case, how about just pulling the curtains open and closed - you can get a rod fixed to the last ring in the curtain to make this easier.

Yes that's exactly what I am worried about. The curtains are very heavy and the windows big which is why the pulley system was installed in the first place. As the curtains are all hitched up onto a rail, you cannot just pull them, they don't move. I hope that's clear! Sorry - hard to describe.

If the system is fixed to the wall at the bottom, presumably it's taut enough that a child couldn't really get tangled in it? My DS's room has a roller blind with a pulley that he can access if he climbs on to the window sill, and I've just attached it to the wall so that there's next to no slack in the cord.

Yes the curtain cords are taut, they are not slack. Does that mean that they are okay? Just about to cut the cords in the bedroom blinds as they hang loose. Thank you for your advice.
