How much do you stick to one subject?

My blog is expanding... it started off as about benefits and social policy, then it took in mental health stigma, then I started putting in personal stories, then I got a bee in my bonnet about children's books.

I'm considering starting to review and recommend some books that fit in with my blog (I've been moaning about gender segregation in children's picture books) but I'm not sure if that will look odd next to my rants about housing benefit, iyswim.

What do you all do?

I think it depends. Some blogs are just varied and not easily categorised. Mine is predominantly a craft blog. I do blog a bit about other stuff but I try and keep it mainly craft because that's the community I want to be part of, and attract.

Not at all. Some days I write about being a mom. Some days about being a designer. Some days about....whatever comes to mind!

My last one was about NaNoWriMo. I'm unpredictable, me!

Mine is very random. The odd personal story, some recipes, lots of politics and rants about the press. I have other blogs which stick to one subject but the main one is very open.

Not in the slightest.

I would love to have a focus to my blog but it's all over the place. I've noticed though that eclectic blogs are very much on the rise - if there's a post anywhere that involves categorising blogs, you'll find that a significant proportion of the commenters will be saying 'But my blog doesn't have a category - I write about all sorts of things!'

The most successful blogs (and by that I mean really really intimidatingly big ones like Rock n Roll Bride etc), I think, are still single focus ones but I think your average blog reader responds really well to a blog that meanders from topic to topic, rather like a magazine. :)

My blog themes are bout parenting, running and starting my jewellery business.

I find that writing about a couple of themes enables me to write more an makes my blog more interesting and I enjoy it more.

mine is all over the place. I need to cut it down a bit, but then I am usually all over the place too, so it stands to reason. I would like to focus in more on my diy/house projects with the odd family story thrown in. I think I try to cover too much

I am quite pleased to find those of you with blogs that are all over the place - mine is! The only theme is things I'm interested in, and that's pretty wide ranging. I've been to talks by bloggers where the considered wisdom seems to be that you need to have a niche, but it doesn't work for everybody. If you're basically blogging for your own enjoyment, then your blog can be whatever you want it to be, it doesn't have to follow any rules if you don't want it to.

I think variety helps the stats too, not that they are important mind.

Another relieved all-over-the-placer here! I sort of need one for professional reasons, but as I'm just starting out there's not too much to say about the professional part of it...so I just share stuff I want to share and hope people enjoy it.

I do try to categorise the content into different streams - so if people like one particular part of it they can see the other posts that are similar.

Mine is very varied. In fact, it is part of the reason I changed the name from ladouceviesuisse to saltandcaramel - because I wanted away from a expat blog to a general blog.

I like reading blogs like Joanne's that are varied. I think if you structure it well, and add tags and categories so that if someone looks for eg. Benefits then they find all that you have written on that subject. I am going through old posts doing that at the moment.

I did wonder about doing separate tabs for each subject but have no idea if that is possible on wp or blogger

My blog is also a bit all over the place. I write about my children, my mental health, and also random thoughts which pop into my head. Some of my posts are a kind of therapy working through what is on my mind, so it's bound to be a bit eclectic.

Ha, ha, so glad I'm not the only one doing this! Mine started as a health and beauty blog, but I now write about parenting as well, and fashion occasionally.
I think it's a good idea to try and tag and categorise if you can.
I am thinking of changing the title as well...at the moment it's 'Beauty but more' - which i hope is kind of all encompassing!

Really interesting views here. My experience is the opposite. I originally started my blog and I intended it to be a parenting, sport and food blog. The parenting and sport part are now on the wayside, and my blog's pretty much a food blog. So I guess it depends on how you feel about it. I've been thinking about changing the name of my blog, but the problem is that its so associated with that name, that its going to be quite hard.
