I want to do a giveaway when I reach my target of 111 projects, wheat do other people think of blog giveaways?

MAybe it's just something that happens on sewing and crafty blogs, but I often see other blogs doing giveaways, where everyone who comments has a chance of being in a raffle to win some prize, and I thought it might be a nice way of marking when I reach my target of 111 projects, the giveaway would be something I have made myself.

Would you enter? Would it appeal? Have any of you done one yourself on your blog?

Probably would not enter, as I always think that the poor blogger would have to post to CH but think that they are popular.

Yes, something that you have made on your blog. I love the Cath Kidson bags that you made a while back. And the printed tshirts. You could do a personalised tshirt as a prize.

overmydeadbody · 29/10/2011 10:30

Ooh thanks for that MmeLindor, a personalised t shirt would be a good idea, with an image of the winner's choice? Within reason?

I was thinking about postage actually, as an awful lot of my readers are American, I guess I could post worldwide, the item won't be too heavy really.

I never enter the giveaways myself, as I always assume I wouldn't win, but there is one blog I regularly visit and she is always doing giveaways, they are really popular, and she lives in Indonesia and posts worldwide.

A tshirt wouldn't cost much to post. I ordered two pairs of halloween tights in US for DD and her friend on eBay. Including postage, they were still cheaper than buying the same tights here. Madness.

Hi Ladies

I have done giveaways on my blog and they are always a great way of driving traffic to your site. Particularly if you are no Twitter and the "professional compers" pick up on it and RT it.

People do enter competitions and real people do win them! You need to make it not too arduous to enter, ie not something that requires a witty response to a phrase etc.

And be specific about whether it is to be drawn at random, or will be "the one that makes me think / laugh / cry" type thing.

Go for it. What's the worst can happen?!

Hello Overmydeadbody, what's the name of your blog? It sounds crafty and I would love to start making stuffs - but only if not complicated to find all the material!!
I guess a giveaway is always good, everybody likes a freeby!
Let us know how it went, I'm trying to get more readers so welcome any new ideas!

Yeah, I love a giveaway! Never won one though.

pipplin · 30/10/2011 19:30

You know I would enter OMDB. You are my sewing guru I would like a prize please

Hopstheduck · 30/10/2011 19:40

I'm a comper, and I think they are great! I don't know about the term professional comper, but I do put a fair few hours in and consider it a bit of an income. I've won a few bloggaversary comps. I use a comp forum to find my comps and I am certain that anything that comes to the attention of them attracts hundreds of new followers. I usually keep up with blogs where I have entered comps too. I've met some lovely bloggers through comping.

If you are a keen twitterer, I would def recommend integrating that with your comp, such as offering extra entries for tweets or rts. As a regular comper it is far easier to keep up with bloggers who tweet regularly, whereas the ones I only follow on google connect or whatever are easy to ignore.

If you do decide to go ahead and want me to spread the word with fellow campers, feel free to dm me :)

Hopstheduck · 30/10/2011 19:42

Another tip - a lot of blog comps have been given prizes in return for testing Nd promoting them, it might be worth exploring this avenue. Of course, you do often still have to pay postage.

overmydeadbody · 31/10/2011 16:45

Thanks everyone for your positive comments! I am looking forward to doing one now!

I'm glad to hear I'm still your sewing guru pipplin! Grin

Wow HopstheDuck, you're a pro! I didn't even know there were such things as compers or websites dedicated to them! It would be great to link it to a comp forum to let everyone know.

I am trying to learn how to use tiwtter but as struggling really, I may have to pm you when I do it to let you spread the word! Thank you so much for all your helpful advice!

MeHeandThem my blog is called so resourceful, have a look, a lot of my crafts are quite easy ones I think!

In fact, I feel so inspired now I think I will do a comp when my views reach 50,000, because that will be really soon, and then I can do another one when I reach 111 projects, which realistically won't be till december.

Reaching 50,000 views is a good thing to celebrate with a giveaway isn't it?

FlamingoBingo · 31/10/2011 17:36

Does it increase your overall hits, those of you who do giveaways? Does anyone who visits for the comp stay for future posts do you find?

overmydeadbody · 31/10/2011 18:52

Good question Flamingo, I didn't really think of doing it to increase hits or generate new visitors, more to keep existing ones and interact with them a bit and encourage lurkers to actually comment! Grin

I like comments and am all for ways to encourage my viewers to actually comment! It means more to me than mere hits.

OP posts:
Hopstheduck · 01/11/2011 09:20

It would def increase visitors and I'm sure a lot of my comper friends are also interested in crafts, so you are bound to get some new regulars out of it, as well as those who just join for the comp. 50,000 views is def a good reason, I'm impressed!

Some people say they will giveaway when they reach a target, such as x amount of followers which really encourages compers to share the comp with even more friends.

overmydeadbody · 04/11/2011 08:16

Well, my views went over 50,000 so I am doing a blog giveaway! here. It's for one of my little shoulder bags, I hope people enter it! I am quite excited! Thanks for all the help and advice!

Hopstheduck feel free to pass on the word to your comper friends!
