Have you ever been tempted to add someone famous on FB that you've never met?

I have a few actors on my FB from way back, was having a nose through their friends. A few are quite well-known. I've met a couple, not that they'd remember, it was ages ago.
Anyway, got me thinking of the above!
(btw The only one I REALLY wanted to add was actress who plays Miss Hoolie, as DD loves Balamory but DD is only 3 and wouldn't really understand Blush)

Nope, leave well alone! Plus how would you know that they are the 'real' person, and not just a 'wannabe'?!

MadameOvary · 14/05/2011 12:10

Hm good point...

I'm FB friends with Malcom Tucker from the Thick of It. I do realise he's a fictional character, and I've no idea who it actually is I've befriended. But every now and then I get a ranty sweary status update which entertains me.

kitkatya · 15/05/2011 09:17

No, I wouldnt. Alot of them are genuine though and they are the ones that you can see but have a private page.

whatkungfuthat · 16/05/2011 13:26

I've got a couple of musicians on mine that I know and who are not really famous, just well known in their genre, but I do have one who used to be really famous that I don't know personally.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 16/05/2011 13:37

But don't they have to accept your friend request? You can't just add them and suddenly start seeing their FB activity. It'd be so embarrassing to send a friend request to someone who doesn't know you from Adam, which would obviously just get ignored. Otherwise I'd have done it ages ago with several of my sleb crushes who I have obsessively looked for on FB and Twitter

whatkungfuthat · 16/05/2011 13:41

They do have to accept (we have mutual RL friends though) but I think you can see status updates until they decide whether to add you or not. I added a friend over weekend (not famous) who was abroad and kept updating what he had eaten but he didn't accept the friend request till he came home.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 16/05/2011 13:42

Oh, interesting. And tempting Smile

NorbertDentressangle · 16/05/2011 13:44

I guess some famous people have fb pages for fans (rather than personal friends) and they would accept anyone who puts in a friend request. They probably then have an alternative page using an alias for friends.

Someone I work with has a lot of authors that shes never met as fb 'friends'.

Pictish · 16/05/2011 13:45

No of course not.

countrybump · 16/05/2011 13:48

I am FB friends with a celeb, but I know them in RL. He is on FB twice - once as himself, and I think he pretty much accepts anyone as a friend and uses it to publicise his programmes etc, and then he has a private page, which is in the name of his dog, and he uses this to keep in touch with his RL friends.

Take a look at the number of friends that have. If it's loads, it's prob a page for fans, so no harm sending a request, as long as your privacy settings are set so that 'friends of friends' can't see your profile, or you may end up unwittingly sharing your holiday snaps with thousands of strangers.

kitkatya · 16/05/2011 14:14

Their official ones just have "like" buttons dont they? you dont have to request just like. They often run both depending on how much a has been they are private and public. Although I know someone who doesnt seem to beable to distinguish between his fans and friends, which I find bizarre.

whatkungfuthat · 16/05/2011 14:42

I know someone like that too Kitkatya, although he is nowhere near as famous as he'd like to think he is and I know him in RL.

kitkatya · 16/05/2011 15:44

I know the type

Alessano Tualagi, from Leicester Tigers, just because I am a Tigers fan!

Wormshuffler · 16/05/2011 15:55

I added 2 australian actors from a comedy called Summer Heights High, which I loved. They both accepted, and when one of them came over to the UK we invited him to a barbeque in a kind of tongue in cheek way and he came!!

whatkungfuthat · 16/05/2011 16:06

Wormshuffler that is brilliant. One RL friend of mine (an old punk star) pops up on my facebook every now and again which shocks the regulars.

Jaspants · 16/05/2011 20:36

I have a couple of slightly famous people on my FB but they are Dads from school so I do know them but not that well
