'Acquired' Sunglasses which turn out to be worth a lot of money - WWYD?

So yesterday afternoon, DP and I went out with a couple of friends for a meal and a few drinks. At 11pm we came home pissed as newts slightly tipsy and whilst getting changed for bed, I found I had a pair of sunglasses on my head.

Now, I didnt go out with any sunglasses and because I was drunk, just put them on the side and went to bed.

Fast forward to this morning. I look at said glasses and realise they are 'Roberto Cavalli' - look to be genuine aswell. I googled the model number thingy from inside the glasses and found out that they are selling for over 300 pounds Shock

I have no idea where they came from! I can only assume that they were lying either on the washbasins in the toilets somewhere, or on the back seat of a cab, and I have picked my bag up and just put them on my head without even realising I've done it. I do wear sunglasses quite often and am used to just putting them on my head to keep my hair back, rather than actually wearing them IYSWIM.

So tomorrow morning I'm going to ring the bars which I can remember we went to and ask if anyone has reported these missing. But as we also used black hackney cabs, I'm not sure who to ring to enquire if they've had them reported as missing - the council?

DP says I should just keep them, and had they been Primarni specials, I may well have done Grin but, I'm a firm believer in Karma and I need to at least try and get them back to their rightful owner.

WWYD?

honestly? I would probably keep them Blush

if i had found them and realised whilst i was out, i would definitely have handed them in, but the morning after........i would keep them.

perhaps not the correct thing to do though....

TequilaMockinBird · 25/04/2011 19:16

If they had been cheapies then I probably would just keep them too Blush but I just keep thinking that if I had lost a pair of sunglasses which cost so much money, I'd be devastated! I may not be able to find out who they belong to, but I have to at least try.

Good move ringing the bars and cabs, I would too.

If you were tipsy are you sure you didn't borrow them from your friedn and forget to hand them back? I'd ring them and ask as well.

TequilaMockinBird · 25/04/2011 19:29

Already rang the friends we were out with and they dont belong to any of them. None of them can even remember seeing me wearing them (or they just didnt notice!).

Curiouser and curiouser!

well if they don't remember them maybe it was the cab? Lucky you if it was, hardly any chance of finding the owner Wink

pinkhebe · 25/04/2011 19:42

You could always hand them into the police, and then after 3 months if no one has claimed them, they're yours, and no guilt Grin

kalo12 · 25/04/2011 19:45

someone nicked my sunglasses that i left in a toilet. i have never got over it. I realised about ten minutes later but they were gone

Pagwatch · 25/04/2011 19:49

Imagine you saved up for ages to get some sunglasses , then went out got a bit pissed and left them somewhere.

What would you want to happen?

boosmummie · 25/04/2011 19:54

Definitely believe in karma. About ten years ago I found someone's phone on the ground - a very nice one at that. Spent ages trying to track them down and managed to return it. F/F to last year and I left my (brand new) BlackBerry in a shop and got it back 6 hours later, someone having found it and rang my daughter to find me.

supadupacreameggscupa · 25/04/2011 20:03

phones are a bit different though aren't they? I would definitely hand in a phone

boosmummie · 25/04/2011 20:06

Well that's what I thought until my DS managed to lose two bloody iPhones is 4 months and oddly enough we never saw them again.

TequilaMockinBird · 25/04/2011 20:07

Yes, the police will be my next stop after contacting the pubs/council re cabs.

I didnt realise that the police would only keep them for 3 months though!

Tbh if I had sunglasses worth that much, I'd probably have them insured and I'd imagine the insurers would need a police report before they paid out for them as lost so that might work!

Pagwatch, I have imagined that hence I'm trying to get them back to their rightful owners. I didn't pick them up on purpose, I can only assume I put my bag down next to them and just picked them up and put them on my head without even realising I'd done it. I didnt 'steal' them on purpose ffs Hmm

Doesn't matter.
You should hand stuff in. You just should.

TequilaMockinBird · 25/04/2011 20:11

I'm going to hand them in, or try to find out who they belong to and hand them back!

Even if I'd noticed I had them before I got home, I have no idea where I'd picked them up. We visited approx 10 pubs, used taxis, ate in a restaurant etc.

That was actually an x post although it doesn't read like it.

I just don't get the wwyd?
You find the best place to hand them in and hand them in. Even if it is a police station.

TequilaMockinBird · 25/04/2011 20:14

The WWYD is more about should I ring around all the places I'd been, ring the council/whoever is responsible for hackney cabs, retrace my steps and call in to each place I'd been and ask them, or just take them straight to the police.

TequilaMockinBird · 25/04/2011 20:16

If you lost them, what would you do? Ring the police or ring around places you'd been?

It was very busy yesterday and people dont just stay in 1 pub, they move around from pub to pub to pub. So it could be that they don't know where they lost them even IYSWIM.

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 25/04/2011 20:20

I would phone the places I had been in, phone the cab firm I used and, if all else failed, the local police station.

atswimtwolengths · 29/04/2011 19:54

Me too, just as I would if I found £300.

Do as you would be done to, eh?

TequilaMockinBird · 03/05/2011 16:08

Just a quick update. I handed them in to the police station last Tuesday, after ringing the pubs I'd been to with no luck.

It is force policy apparently that if they are not claimed within 14 days, I can keep them Shock

As its only 2.5 weeks until my wedding (in the Caribbean), I'm now secretly hoping they're not claimed Wink Grin
