Yes Spiro, horrible to hear William's dismissive discussion about his daughter Sad

SupermassiveLBD · 13/04/2011 22:26

I did read that the BBC will be extending i-player coverage to include, for a fee, us folk wot live in furrin parts. I do hope it's true, but it wouldn't half sabotage their international channel.

TheSmallPrint · 13/04/2011 22:30

That will be good Massive, you won't need to sit there wondering what on earth we are wittering on about.

TheSmallPrint · 13/04/2011 22:32

Right, time for bed. Smallboy minor was up at 5.20 this morning so better get some zzzz in before he's up again.

SupermassiveLBD · 13/04/2011 22:32

Precisely Small. Though then I might spend too much time watching the telly.

DumSpiroSpero · 13/04/2011 22:33

Not to mention his poor wife who seems to have had PND and a doctor with no morals to make it worse - quite chilling.

Anyhoo. Off to bed now (with visions of baby oil covered JP in my head!) - night night!

SupermassiveLBD · 13/04/2011 22:33

Night night then, Small, have a good one.

::Staggers back in::

I've been away for a few days. Statement of the blindingly obvious. Then I surrendered the PC to Bloke who tried but failed to sort out the email problems I've been having for weeks. I'm glad to see that you have not been neglecting the divine Mr Thornton in my absence although of course he was with me, taking the sea air. And

::fanfare of trumpets::

::24 gun salute::

We have a telly. But could not watch TCPATW as Girl was not properly in bed and it was clearly never going to be suitable viewing for her.

SupermassiveLBD · 14/04/2011 00:43

Congrats on your new telly, Maudie. Hooray! I hope you will be be very happy together. Lots of lovely DVD fun too, all beautifully bigged up.

Welcome back from your break btw. We missed and needed you! Wink

TheSmallPrint · 14/04/2011 07:44

Morning! Up at 5.33am precisely .

Spiro did not see last weeks or the first 15 mins of this week, in fact I only left it on due to your recommendation last week. I didn't realise his wife had pnd or what the dr was about (although certainly got bad vibes off him). Why does she think Sugar is an angel?

Maud, so pleased to hear that the tv has finally arrived, is it as good as you hoped?

DumSpiroSpero · 14/04/2011 07:57

Oh dear Small - pre 6am starts are not good. Have only been up an hour but DD still quite poorly so off to the docs today I think as its been 3 days now.

I'm presuming the wifes MH problems started as PND as William says shes been particularly bad since the birth of their daughter. I'm not sure why she thinks Sugar is an angel...perhaps Maud can enlighten us?

PassTheTwiglets · 14/04/2011 08:46

Just in and out quickly this morning as am dashing out for the day but have you seen the Hobbit production video yet?! RA speaks Maori and looks rather, ahem, inspiring in a blue shirt and jeans. I didn't have time to waytch it all this morning so let me know if you find any prosthetic details! He is clean shaven so I'm guessing that something horrid will be occurring to spoil that lovely face :(

Here you go - enjoy!!

PassTheTwiglets · 14/04/2011 08:50

Btw, just after 7 minutes is his main segment in the video. The cutest little laugh follows shortlfy after his Maori speech. I will using the memory of that to get me through 'family day' :)

Twigs I can't get on that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I was soo excited Sad

TheSmallPrint · 14/04/2011 08:52

take it back, it's now working

TheSmallPrint · 14/04/2011 09:06

Thanks Twigs, that's a really interesting blog - and not just because Our Man is in it. I hope they do regular ones.

Very brave of him to stand up and speak in Maori (from someone who has a fear of being laughed at when speaking a forrin language - I blame the Parisians).

DumSpiroSpero · 14/04/2011 09:37

OMG! Be still my beating heart!!!

DumSpiroSpero · 14/04/2011 09:48

Actually - I know RA has mentioned in interviews before that he hates clothes shopping and tends to just acquire a lot of his characters clothes - and I was thinking - that shirt looks familiar?!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 14/04/2011 10:33

Morning all!

::Ignores gratuitous close your eyes shot::

Briefly, as I must attend to domesticity. Ugh. About TCPATW. In the book, it is indicated that the wife has had mental health problems since puberty, about which she apparently knew nothing and had not been forewarned by any of the women around her. She seems to have been in total ignorance/denial of her pregnancy and the existence of the child is never acknowledged in her presence. She thinks that Sugar is an angel because she spends her time reading religious pamphlets - there's another strand about her stepfather's refusal to allow her to follow the Catholic faith into which she was born but of which he disapproves - and so there may be an element of religious mania here too. The doctor is a very sinister figure.

DumSpiroSpero · 14/04/2011 11:58

Thanks for that Maud.

There's not been any reference to the anti-Catholic stepfather as far as I can recall.

I go the impression that the doctor had used the problems she had after giving birth to daughter as an excuse to molest her and that was what was making the situation worse, but perhaps I'm reading something into the situation that isn't there?

I can see I may have to read the book at some point as there's obviously a lot more too it than they are putting on screen.

TheSmallPrint · 14/04/2011 12:02

Thanks Maud Grin

Spiro it's not just the shirt it's the whole ensemble!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 14/04/2011 12:11

Spiro, I hope I haven't included too many spoilers. It may be that the anti-Catholic stepfather won't be mentioned in the TV adaptation. There's certainly an insinuation in the book that all the internal examinations to which the doctor subjects her are unnecessary - how much this is abuse and how much it is part of the belief that the womb causes mental illness (literally hysteria), which may in itself be abusive, seems open.

If we're having a shirt moment, I'll mention the floppy white shirt. Also available in other colours.

DumSpiroSpero · 14/04/2011 12:23

I don't think you could say that the belief the womb causes mental illness in itself is abusive in that context, as it was just the extent of medical knowledge those days I presume (albeit horrifically wrong but they wouldn't have known any better).

I imagine the relationship between Mrs Fox and William's brother is explored in more detail in the book too?

SupermassiveLBD · 14/04/2011 12:27

Oh, Maud, are you trying to punish me, or something? However am I going to be able to get on with all these mundane tasks I have to do with the image of the BFS dangling tantalisingly before my eyes?

I have been reading back with interest re the Scarlet Petal. Lots of very weird and unpleasant things going on in men's minds in those days, or at least that's the impression I always get.
