Any opinions on Will & Jada Pinkett Smith's kid's careers?

I've been pondering this but not sure what to make of both of their children to be in the entertainment business at such a young age.

I think they do a good job of managing which projects they get involved with tbh but I do wonder about the effect on the children.

'I flick my hair back and forth' has been stuck in my head all day.

Well no doubt I'll get told I'm not allowed to judge but I think it's all kinds of wrong.

How ginormous must Will and Jada's egos be to give their kids names made up of their own names and then create little mini-me's??

There is no way on earth those kids would be following those paths if they had normal parents.

Oh and fwiw the boy (Jaden) comes across like a smug entitled little brat. Nearly all Hollywood journos who've met him on the press calls for his movies back this up.

The wee girl just seems like a puppet being manipulated by adults. The oh so wacky dress sense and full on adult make-up at 10 years old is wrong to me.

Throw in to the mix the rumours about their parents personal lives (again rumours that are all but confirmed by those in the know much like the John Travolta situation) and it just seems very very wrong and sad for the kids.

Oh and it's 'I whip my hair back and forth' Grin not that it makes any more sense that way.

cornsilk · 26/01/2011 19:23

'I whip my hair back and forth' - explain please!

nevergoogledragonbutter · 26/01/2011 19:25

ah, sorry, course it is.

well, yes there's makeup, but the clothes are funky but not too much skin from what i remember of the video.

i'll find a like for corny, poor thing is on this thread without the relevant information. Grin

traceybath · 26/01/2011 19:32

Well I did read an interview with the little girl and her mother recently and the mother did make the point that the children could stop at any point. Unlike many actor/singer children they weren't supporting the whole family with their earnings.

BlessedAssurance · 26/01/2011 19:32

the older son is called Trey,,and is not in the 'business'

BunnyLebowski · 26/01/2011 19:32

No you're right nevergoogle it's not overtly sexual and she doesn't flash excessive flesh but <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=thatgrapejuice.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/willow-smith-56.jpg&imgrefurl=thatgrapejuice.net/2010/09/song-willow-smith-whip-hair/&usg=__N-pDpCcfy2ZEaIwmU3bmKxuzheI=&h=655&w=450&sz=106&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=xNeTOdCIstE0tM:&tbnh=148&tbnw=111&ei=V3ZATaaDO5GEhQeH3dGeAw&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwillow%2Bsmith%2Bwhip%2Bmy%2Bhair%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1680%26bih%3D856%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=1368&vpy=203&dur=4680&hovh=271&hovw=186&tx=109&ty=96&oei=V3ZATaaDO5GEhQeH3dGeAw&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=53&ved=1t:429,r:20,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">look at this

There's no way that every element of that look is not planned and thought out by a pushy stage mother and staff of stylists rather than by a 10 year old. Hardly age appropriate and so desperately contrived.

Maybe they've blown whatever money they made and are relying on the juniors to fund their retirement.

talkingnonsense · 26/01/2011 19:35

Trey-short for will smith the third though!

nevergoogledragonbutter · 26/01/2011 19:35

Will Smith's name is Willard Christopher Smith Jr

His first son is called Willard Christopher "Trey" Smith III

then there's Jaden Christopher Syre Smith
Willow Camille Reign Smith

In their defence i think Willow Camille is a lovely name.

Anyway, back to the judgement...i guess the kids are making plenty money for their futures, but i can't imagine they need the money given their parents careers.
I hope they are having fun and not being pushed or just expected to be entertainers.

BunnyLebowski · 26/01/2011 19:41

That was a tongue in cheek comment of me. Given that Will Smith gets paid about £20 million per role I think they're probably covering the mortgage Wink

Of course it could be the case that the kids are doing it all happily and of their own volition. I hope that is the case but I have my doubts.

To me it looks like the parents possibly see the children as extensions of their own personalities/careers.

The use of Reign and Syre in the kid's names does little to quell my feelings on ego and sense of entitlement I have to say Grin.

TheCrackFox · 26/01/2011 19:45

I think that it is all too much too soon. You only get one childhood and it shouldn't be spent working.

They will all live to regret this. I can't actually think of any happy grown up child actors/performers.

saffyronron · 26/01/2011 19:49

I think it's a great song and really refreshing to see kids in a video having fun without it being sexualised. Lots of 10 year old girls would love the opportunity to star in their own pop video (I can remember singing in front of the mirror and dreaming about being a pop star). I don't think there's anything wrong with their parents helping them achieve their dreams of being in the public eye as an artist. It's a catchy little tune and she's a cute little girl with a sense of style and fun. I know nothing of the parents but I do remember watching an interview with Will Smith and he was anti music with obscenity/profanity etc., my guess is he's a decent enough man.

cornsilk · 27/01/2011 07:42

God I didn't realise that song was by a child!

nevergoogledragonbutter · 27/01/2011 08:10

Yes, it's very good. Not your usual novelty song from a kid. And yes, video fun and funky. Something for kids to aspire to I guess.
But that's a lot of responsibility isn't it.
Britney Spears was in the same place once.

A fair few child performers have grown up fine, Jodie Foster, (apart from the stalker) Dennis Waterman, Bonnie Langford and Natalie Portman leap to mind and I wouldn't bet against two of the three Potter leads doing well.

fartmeistergeneral · 27/01/2011 09:06

I don't know, it just smacks of so much EFFORT! And I can visualise the 4 of them sitting in ridiculously contrived outfits surrounded by such incredible wealth - I find it scary to be honest. I think it's because the children will have such an alien (alien to me I mean) view of the world from their very high pedestal.

I just wonder if Jaden might one day ask to wear a t-shirt and trackie bottoms and his mum/dad would say NO!!!

fartmeistergeneral · 27/01/2011 09:12

I've just watched the video and confess to being impressed at a 9/10 year old's ability to sing and dance like that and ... I don't know... presence.

Precocious children like that freak me out though. Am 42 and am completely intimidated through my computer screen.... [bshock]

Highlander · 27/01/2011 16:40

There's a very telling interview with J-PS and her daughter on the extra stuff for Madagascar 2.

Daughter is asked if she enjoyed acting.....

'well, mom said I had to'

J-PS, 'no I didn't!'

Hmmmmm

nevergoogledragonbutter · 27/01/2011 17:25

oh is there.
hmm indeed.

OP posts:
BunnyLebowski · 27/01/2011 17:27

Highlander - Haven't seen that but it sounds about right to me.

grumpypants · 27/01/2011 17:31

oh does it matter? they have rich, famous parents - why would they even want a normal childhood when they can be in films and make music videos, with no need for all that dull audition stuff? Is it really so much better to hang out with the neighbourhood kids, not be famous, and become an accountant? Neither are dreadful.

TwoIfBySea · 27/01/2011 22:32

dragon butter, that link is fabulous - GloZell is my new hero!

I am now going to use the phrase "I whip my hair round and round" in a similar fashion!
