We have A Single Man - it's quite an intense movie - one thing I'll mention is that the cast includes an incredibly fit looking Nicholas Hoult (who was in About A Boy with Hugh Grant, but is now, thankfully, rather more grown up).

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 21:11

Judging from the synopsis it's as well you didn't bother with Valmont, Flowers, it sounds like Lovelace on steroids. Those aristos were very naughty over in la Belle France.

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/01/2011 21:12

I need a man, Theresa, not a callow youth. There is, though, someone else whose kind hands might provide comfort to a lady.

What's a sustificate, Teri?

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/01/2011 21:18

Is Valmont good? My hazy recollection of the time of Liaisons Dangereuses fever (and yes I did read the book, see the play and see the film) was that it was the adaptation that came too late and wasn't Dangerous Liaisons.

I am sure Master Hoult is a fine young man but I am old enough to be his mother and he will never be so much as a tiny blip on my fitness radar. I have, ahem, other preoccupations.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 21:19

Poor Lee, so under-appreciated. but I do see what you mean, Flowers. Strong but sensitive, rather than a bit thick if quite pretty.

Re all these naughty films, I reckon I'm going to have to wait till I get to the UK for them. or face being deported in shame from Limpopoland

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 21:22

A sustificate is what you get from qualified safety ossifers when you have completed their elf and safety course, Oyster. Lee probably has one on his trophy wall, but he might have made his himself.

PrairieOyster · 05/01/2011 21:30

Oh I'm really not interested in Master Hoult, but I do admit to it being a rather pleasant surprise when he turned up in that movie.

PrairieOyster · 05/01/2011 21:34

I love that the No comment emoticon here is a Jammy Dodger Biscuit

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 21:43

The festive ones have gone at last, I see.

Guess what, after RH 2's return was promised, the International Beeb are announcing that they will be showing Spooks But they didn't say which series, and the only date they gave was "in 2011" Very helpful.

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/01/2011 21:54

But that's the difference between us, Oyster. We watched the first two series of Skins because we indirectly knew some of the cast but the fitness or not of Master Hoult and the others never registered with me. I really am That Old. From where I sit Mr Armitage is a Nice Young Man (hence my preference for Mr Thornton who at 190 approx is more my age).

My mater talks of sustificates, Theresa. Does it originate with Tommy Handley or someone of that vintage?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 21:58

I wouldn't know, Flowers, I got it from my own dear mama. who delighted in anything like that for the sheer cheesey ridiculousness of it.

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/01/2011 22:09

Yes, mine too. A trawl through online dictionaries of slang has so far been fruitless, although it's mentioned as a London thing and Alf Garnett apparently used it. My dear mater, though, has never watched Mr Garnett.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 22:15

Maybe it's something Morecambe and Wise used as well. She would quote whole screeds from them. it made her day when they finally explained the two old men in deckchairs joke Blush

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/01/2011 22:17

I'm orf for an early night with a good book (The Crimson Petal and The White, actually, as inspired by Certain Events on an Earlier Thread) but will leave you with some Art. I saw this at the weekend (sadly only in reproduction) and thought it had certain aesthetic properties which might appeal to admirers of the Academy Michelangelo.

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/01/2011 22:22

That reminds me of when a distant relative visited one Christmas from abroad and was shocked at the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show, which they considered Pure Filth.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 22:23

Oh, that's interesting, Flowers. I still prefer the Michelangelo but this is worth a look indeed. Enjoy your book.
I am in the Throes of Composition, in case we need a Story Night any time.
Sweet Dreams to you when the time comes to put your well-thumbed tome down, no doubt in your book-lined study, and go to rest your weary head

MrsLucasNorth · 05/01/2011 22:25

Speaking of naughty aristos - have been flicking through The Sunne in Splendour this eve and it's quite fact in parts Shock

Oyster - have you ordered your goodies from Amazon? Will be interested to hear if your BtS suffers from the same problems as mine (both) did Angry!

asmallbunchofflowers · 05/01/2011 22:31

Well, I know we all like to look at a muscular bottom great works of art. I am still researching what the piece is about.

Book-lined study? We have book-lined everything as The Poet believes that every book you have read contains a piece of your soul (and your soul it) so it would be bad karma ever to get rid of a book. Books do furnish a room but they are also a trip hazard.

PrairieOyster · 05/01/2011 22:33

Yes I did order it from Amazon, MrsLN - will keep you posted.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 05/01/2011 22:33

MrsLP, was your second BtS the new issue with the differenct cover, or what?

I do hope The Sunne isn't as bad as The Tudors -- that made me swallow my pince-nez. And there was me thinking it was going to be a nice educational watch. Which I suppose it was but not quite in the way I anticipated. And we had the bowdlerised edition!

MrsLucasNorth · 06/01/2011 08:25

No I think it was an old one. Am sooo tempted to order the new version but at nearly 3x the price when I know the story it doesn't seem quite justifiable (remembers Christmas money - nojoooooo!)

StripeyMoon · 06/01/2011 10:16

I forgot. They didn't have Venetia, it's Sylvester! I have just started listening, I hope it improves soon! Grin

StripeyMoon · 06/01/2011 11:38

Just found this clip that I haven't seen before if anyone fancies a bit of swooning at some brooding -

MrsLucasNorth · 06/01/2011 12:16

Stripey - is it lots of girly waffle at the beginning before you get to the good stuff? Venetia was a bit like that for the first hour or so - took me about 3 weeks to get into it but Lord Damerel is definitely worth waiting for!

I treated myself to Sylvester and A Convenient Marriage for Christmas but must finish Lords of The North first and am only on disk 5 of 10!
