How do I turn off chat?

How do I change it so that I don't appear on people's chat list when I sign in? I've had a look through the account settings and privacy settings but I haven't been able to do it. I suspect it's something really simple that I have missed!

on the chat box you just switch to 'appear offline' or words to that effect. so everytime you sign into fb you will not be seen.
