We offer courses at all levels from introductory to advanced and opportunities for independent research. Come and share your learning with us.

Sadly, no. All I have seen of Downton Abbey is the huge billboard adverts. But Mr Bates looks rather grumpy and austere compared to the twinkly Higgins.

Just found this online. FLOWERS!! How dare you not mention the Lucas moment from the final paragraph, young lady?!

---------

Richard appeared in the first of the plays, The Third Wish, written by Stephen Beresford and directed by Charlie Westenra. Like most of the other plays, it was a comedy and the cast also included Miranda Raison (his former co-star from Spooks), Niamh Cusack and Debbie Chazen. He played Dennis, the husband in a couple who'd inadvertently bought a magic Christmas tree (a miniature tree that had been brought along by one of the participants the previous evening.) As Debbie, his wife, explained to her two sisters, she'd happened to say that she wished their flat was bigger, and it had suddenly transformed into a spacious apartment (a neat way of explaining the set - all of the plays were performed on the Act 3 set of Noel Coward's Design for Living, which is currently playing at the Old Vic during the week. It depicts a luxurious New York City penthouse in the 1930s.)

She explained that Dennis (off-stage) had made the second wish, and she wanted advice from her sisters about what the third wish should be. The overweight and balding Dennis had wished to look like Richard Armitage. Which he did...

Delighting in his new body, he spent the next few minutes bounding around the stage - waltzing around the room and up the stairs with his wife, sliding down the banisters, tossing his hair in all directions (just because he now had hair to toss), crouching down with gun in hand in imitation of Lucas North... and then discovering his pecs. Like all the plays, it was hugely enjoyable and very well-received.

Oyster did give us a link to a blog that gave that information, Boden. Maybe Flowers thought it had already been said.

Anyway put yourself into her position. Wouldn't you have been a bit flummoxed and forgetful in that situation? Grin

Boden - What can I say? There is no such thing as objective reality, only our perceptions and interpretations of it (it says here on my notes from the university's philosophy department). I provided a synopsis of the play and Mr Armitage's performance within it, as I perceived them. I highlighted the bits that I found most, ahem, arresting. The pretending-to-be-Lucas imaginary-gun-waggling was way down my list of memorable moments!

BodenBabe · 24/11/2010 22:04

I think Oyster's link was to a different blog? I hadn't read the Lucas bit before. I think I would have literally screamed. Was just teasing, anyway :)

BodenBabe · 24/11/2010 22:05

I would have screamed at that bit had I been in the audience, I meant...

Joking aside, the plays from previous years seem not to have ended up on YT. But the Old Vic has placed some of the introductory behind-the-scenes films there. The gala's also going to be discussed on the Culture Show tomorrow, I heard (probably on here).

Sorry to post and run, Ladies, DD just woke me up so am downstairs briefly before returning to bed.
Oh for late night tutorials in the seminar, sipping Polish cordial and engaging in like- minded drooling intellectual debate.

Sigh. Night all.

MadameOvary · 24/11/2010 22:10

Ooh thank you Flowers Smile

Theresaholeinyourmind · 24/11/2010 22:11

It would be great to see it on YT but at least we had our esteemed Rector there to act as our eyes and ears and radiator of positive thoughts.

BodenBabe · 24/11/2010 22:12

Um, was it here here where I read about RA's coat from the after-show party? Can't find it anywhere now... need to know what it was (I know it was Burberry but was there any more info?)

asmallbunchofflowers · 24/11/2010 22:14

Yes, Oyster (I think) posted a link to the Burberry website. You could do an advanced search to find it.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 24/11/2010 22:16

I think Oyster posted a link, Boden. If you do an advanced search using her name and the make you might find it.

asmallbunchofflowers · 24/11/2010 22:17

Two minds thinking as one, Theresa!

I think most people's present budget will be considered frugal if measured against thousand quid coats

BodenBabe · 24/11/2010 22:25

Good Lord no, I want to know what it was so that I can Google for cheap knock-offs :o DH needs a coat (honestly!) and, RA not withstanding, I loved that one. Actually thinking of this one from M&S.

And this is a pretty good copy of Lucas' Belstaff jacket.

asmallbunchofflowers · 24/11/2010 22:26

Oh, indeed.

May I deliver my latest seminar? It develops some of the themes in the piece you presented to me last night.

OP posts:
BodenBabe · 24/11/2010 22:28

Ooooh, yes please Flowers! Deliver away!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 24/11/2010 22:32

Go ahead, Flowers we await with bated breath.
As always I am dying to get my teeth into a nice meaty topic.

I am laughing my socks off at the thought of umpteen DHs across the country all going about dressed as Armitage persona clones. Imagine them eyeing each other suspiciously across a crowded train carriage or something...Ha ha.

asmallbunchofflowers · 24/11/2010 22:37

Whether she knew it or not, Theresa's absolutely beautiful piece of creative writing last night (and the trailer for it) presaged some of the themes in the seminar I am about to present. You may wish to have a Polish cordial or glass of Chateau Gisborne to hand, to aid concentration.

My topic tonight is [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQwciVI9IcY
White Cotton, Black Looks: Contrast, Contradiction and Contumely in the Victorian Man of Business]].

ROFL at that image too now, Theresa!!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 24/11/2010 22:45

Grin What a find, Flowers, I had no idea there was one, though I knew the song and often thought it would be perfect for him.
What do they mean, though, ''you're not handsome''?
A man who is gorgeousness personified?
Tut tut and thrice tut.

Oh yum at the finish too.

May I have a and or two at him, pretty please?
