And here are our study materials for the evening. Not sure if we've had them before, but have tried to find new ones - is getting trickier Grin!

Enjoy!

It was the original blockbuster wasn't it?
I would so like to see the shades of meaning that Richardson gave it, away from any later interpretations by actors and the like.

I have a feeling I am far too willing to give Lovelace the benefit of the doubt because of RA's performance.

But the sheer size of the book is daunting. A lot of it is online but would take forever to wade through.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 22/11/2010 18:51

I'm still here. I'm just gasping at the reference to Guy as wild red hot sex incarnate not inconsiderably handsome.

Interesting textual analysis, Theresa. Where did you find it? I suspect it's pretty accurate, although I am not enough of a literary theorist to have any valid opinion. The description of Clarissa is both sensuous and sensual and, clearly, not written from a disinterested perspective.

MrsLucasNorth · 22/11/2010 18:57

I must admit I'm just as interested in reading it to see if there's more character development where Dorcas is concerned as I found her probably the most sympathetic character in the R4 play.

Sorry for my lapse, Flowers, I usually try to keep the more unruly elements of my nature in check

But I refer you to 1.18, 1.36 and 2.59 to 3.02 in that vid and you may see I was sorely provoked.

The Clarissa bit is courtesy of google of course, it seems to be some class notes from a Virginia U. Eng Lit course

I thought the adaptation worked very well, condensing it and turning it into almost poetry.

It must have been a daunting job as a whole when you consider the size of the original

Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 19:06

Look at us though, along with all the swooning we have got seriously interested in Literachoower.

Good point about Dorcas Mrs LN

Fettle · 22/11/2010 20:50

Evening ladies - real life is really too busy for my liking at the moment!!Grin

I've not got a chance of catching up on any lectures since last week, so have I missed any further John Lucas chapters!! Or anything else of interest?

Although I did pick up in my brief skim last night, that someone in our midst has breathed the same air as Mr RA!! Oh Flowers! How lovely? I do agree with you totally about not loving him as an actor but his characters as he really doesn't seem to encourage that sort of idolation in any interviews, but surely now that he's played himself in a play, he himself is his own character and therefore we can idolise him playing himself?! ConfusedHmm

Think I need to go lie down!!

BTW, I assume whoever was bidding on that strikeback DVD has seen that it has been relisted!

Must go and hopefully at some point before Christmas I'll be able to be back properly!!Grin

xxx

MrsLucasNorth · 22/11/2010 20:53

Whole first chapter of John Lucas on page 33, Fettle.

Don't be a stranger...Grin

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 22/11/2010 21:08

Hello, Fettle. I'd been wondering where you were and hoping all was well Chez Fettle.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 22/11/2010 21:15

I set myself a little challenge earlier, to see if anyone had combined the joys of Guy and those of the Greatest Interpreter of American Song. And (not entirely to my surprise as there are thousands of vids) they have. So here, rather premature, is . It is imperative that you watch to the very end.

That said, I really don't think this sounds like Francis Albert, whatever the caption says. What do other Sinatra connoisseurs think?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 21:15

I just recapped on the recap, Mrs LN. Thanks. I feel for Fettle, I have had a busy RL day today.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 21:20

Talking of the Joys of Guy (while waiting for YT to get its act together) does anyone remember ever seeing a little boys/girls room in Nottingham Castle?

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 22/11/2010 21:30

Err, no. And as previously remarked, unlike the squeaky-clean Robin, Guy has never been known to have a bath. Although didn't someone hint that that pleasure may await us?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 21:40

I am not talking of baths, on that subject my lips are sealed. Wink But spending a farthing or whatever they spent in those days

But that's the case with fiction, isn't it, nobody ever seems to go

I am having doubts as to whether that was Ol' Blue Eyes too. Though his voice does vary through the years, it didn't sound smooth enough.Zillions of people have recorded it. I wish I had the track to compare it.

MrsLucasNorth · 22/11/2010 21:42

Not sure what episode i'm watching, but Guy has just given Marion the 'not quite whole without you' speech....

Grin
OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 21:48

Marian!

Why don't you carry on,
With what you're doing.
'Cos there's always
Trouble brewing.
You've got to find a way,
To make a better day!
Whoa, Marian!

Mrs LN I could seriously slap her with a wet fish.

Stupid girl

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 22/11/2010 21:49

I realise, Theresa. But I was thinking more broadly about ablution facilities or the lack thereof. But, come to think of it, in one of the episodes at the end of series 1 (which is still as far as I've got) don't Robin and sidekick escape by jumping down the privy?

MrsLucasNorth · 22/11/2010 21:58

Onto the 'wedding' episode - Robin really is a petulant little fuckwit isn't he?

As for Marion, talking about Gisbourne:
"He has...qualities..."

Well, duh! Stupid girl indeed.

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 22:00

Oh, brilliant, Flowers, I must check that out. What a great excuse to get the DVDs, my research on medieval plumbing! Robin in deep do-do, eh? Poetic justice.

I sm sure Guy had lots of baths. I bet there were oodles of eager serving wenches that would volunteer for the job. They just couldn't show that on a kiddies' show, you see. All the mums would have come over all unnecessary and the nation would have to have gone without their Saturday tea.

40deniertights · 22/11/2010 22:01

Can't believe what I missed yesterday!!. We need a sort of alarm system for news of that magnitude!! Flowers could have done the accosting I talked of earlier and warned him off Hollywood (not in a creepy fortune teller way, in a helpful way.

38 here btw. Is there a sort of hormonal regression that comes along late 30's do you think?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 22:02

''Robin really is a petulant little fuckwit''

I am with you there again, Mrs LN. Must watch Flowers' escape down the privy ep for a laugh.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 22:05

''...warned him off Hollywood ''

Did you see that news item about the hordes of rabid bats there?

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 22/11/2010 22:09

Tights - Perhaps, just perhaps, he will be so encouraged by the rapturous reception given to his first stage performance for 9 years that he will decide to forego the pleasure of going to New Zealand to be a dwarf and will decide instead to appear regularly at the Old Vic.

MrsLucasNorth · 22/11/2010 22:12

Oooh! I think I might be the youngest member of the Academy at 35, does that mean I have an excuse for my v. adolescent behaviour of late? Grin

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 22/11/2010 22:14

I need to start developing my little stories into plays methinks. Perhaps that would lure him back from Middle Earth and LaLaLand.

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 22/11/2010 22:16

That would be lovely, indeed Flowers. But I hope he will do some TV as well for those of us who don't live quite so conveniently for popping in for a quick swoon.
