... how long could you survive with what you have in your house right now?

Do you have any tins/bottled water etc put away in case of a emergency?

Have been frealing myself out reading some wacky conspiray sites (all baging on about something huge happeneing in the next 2 weeks) - Im not be;lieveing it, but it has made me think that one day there could be an event and I probably would only last a week with my store cupboard!

Blinkbox did an article on this hired a Zombie survivalist to find the best places to hide out during the zombie apocolypse. Apparently the best place is BlackPool tower, you can get up high and it has resteraunts when the resteraunt food runs out you can survive on the fish in the aquariums. Grin

I have my full plan worked out for the Zombie Apocolypse, we have full supplies and could easily survive 3 months. [geek]

"Needs no fuel, light enough to carry, can navigate around barricades and burnt-out cars, and propel you at speeds up to 30MPH. Take a car if you like - you'll be travelling in your own coffin"

Loving this description of a mountain bike on 'zombie list' from amazon

winnybella · 04/11/2010 13:54

thisishowIfeel- seems like a thing that maybe they would want to have handy in case of terrorist attacks? After 9/11 the mobiles didn't work properly in NYC. And recently the terror threat's been talked about a lot.

DinahRod · 04/11/2010 13:54

Under the guise of improving their writing to inform, explain & describe, my students all have a zombie plan. The genius is they then demonstrate a practical survival skill - I have a cupboard of dodgily made snares, bamboo arrows, string with various knots in it and a plastic bottle .

Am off to dig a trapping pit in the garden and see what falls in.

DastardlyandSmugly · 04/11/2010 13:57

DH has recently done a CostCo run so we have a loft full of kitchen roll and toilet roll, loads of tins, pasta and a full freezer. No bottled water though.

Horton · 04/11/2010 13:58

I reckon we could survive for quite a while on what's in the house. If we still had electricity, I think maybe about two months (we have tons of fishfingers, mince, frozen veg etc in the freezer). Without electricity probably only a month or so. I have a fine collection of tins of things. Water would be more of a problem. I think we only have about a week's worth of water. But we live near a river so as long as it's not contaminated we would probably survive.

thisishowifeel has properly spooked me out.

upstairs flat is good when there is flooding"

exactly - my old house was completely upstairs - the only rooms downstairs were the bedrooms, and if it's that much of an emergency, you can easily sleep in the living room.

I would have brought all the clothes, bedding and mattresses upstairs when I knew the flood was on its way.

and we had a coft loft, so could sleep in that.
and it was at the top of the North Downs, we had a High point just 100 yards away.

my new house is useless!!! :(

mychatnickname · 04/11/2010 14:11

Right been to M&S and picked up a few extra tins.
This is not just any apocalyptic tinned food, this is M&S apocalyptic tinned food.

Hassled · 04/11/2010 14:13

thisishowIfeel - did you do the NatWest Telephone banking voice? I'm quite fond of her - when she announces how little money is in my current account she always has a note of sympathy in her voice, like she wishes it could be better news.

I like all these links. The only thing I have of any use is a wind up torch, a hamster and an elderly chicken. And the aforementioned wine. But I do have a couple of large wooden chests which I think would be good as boats in a flood.

Horton · 04/11/2010 14:14

I've just remembered we have a blow up boat! Hoorah! Only it's so vast that it would take us a week to blow it up, I think. We don't have a pump. Maybe we should have a pump.

Thingumy · 04/11/2010 14:16

Would it be best to stock pile wine or gin or vodka? Maybe all 3?

If I stock piled gin/vodka I then would have to buy in mixers

Sales of corned beef will rocket..

nickelbangBANGbang · 04/11/2010 14:17

hassled - your best bet would be 5 young chickens (point of lay) and a cock - then you can eat the eggs from the chickens for as long as possible and have the cock mate with the hens, and you can hatch all your spare eggs, which will grow into hens and cockerels - you eat the cockerels before they mature, and the hens will lay eggs.
You can have them living in the house with you, but give them their own room with good ventilation.
Grin

Horton · 04/11/2010 14:19

I think gin or vodka would be best. You can use it as emergency antiseptic if necessary.

bullet234 · 04/11/2010 14:22

I think the lack of water is done to purely scaremonger. We know that no one can predict an accident that would contaminate all water. So the other possibility is a terrorise attack. Now, there's people who are prepared to die for their cause, but not everyone in a terrorist organisation would be and they wouldn't cut off their nose to spite their face by severely limiting their own water supply. There might be some who wanted to see the end of humanity, but not to see all other life on earth eradicated, so they would have no need to poison the water. Plus the logistics of getting all the water poisoned would be very tricky.
So the only real doubt would be loss of food and since a zombie apocalypse won't really happen, the only absolute immediate situation, that would be theoretically plausible would be something that made the banks collapse or prevented people in some way from getting access to their money to pay for things.

BoffinMum · 04/11/2010 14:23

I have my Boff's Box of Last Resort, to be grabbed whenever Armageddon strikes.

And other things secreted about the place.

Very excited by the rpresence of this thread as I am a secret survivalist. I am off to read it in detail and make notes now. Grin

brookeslay · 04/11/2010 14:25

useful

I particulary like the hand signals page two. My DP and I often do those ( 24 Jack Bauer stylee) well indoors anyway.

Like the Maxim in Zombie list a Sharp knife is a Happy Knife.!!

nickelbangBANGbang · 04/11/2010 14:27

I should imagine the only thing that could make the water undrinkable would be nuclear fallout.

anything else can be boiled out.

Horton · 04/11/2010 14:29

If there is a massive power cut, pumps etc won't operate I presume. I suppose they must have some kind of failsafe system built in for emergency supplies though. And people might not be able to get to work anyway to do whatever the water people do.

Chamomile · 04/11/2010 14:34

I remember reading that the water processing plants only have a few days worth of chlorine or whatever they use so would be sensitive to any disruption of fuel or transport problems.

BeenBeta · 04/11/2010 14:36

The US president has a special car with a command centre to contact US Strategic Command.

This is how the UK does it according to Wikipedia:

"The process by which a Trident submarine would determine if the British government continues to function includes, amongst other checks, establishing whether BBC Radio 4 continues broadcasting."

I'm not sure which makes me feel safer.

loopylou6 · 04/11/2010 14:38

Omg for the past 3 nights I've dreamt we got bombed/invaded Shock [scared]

Hassled · 04/11/2010 14:42

I LOVE those hand gestures :o. Particularly the one for "dog". That'll come in handy some day, I'm sure of it.

Gin and vodka - useful antiseptic, yes, but don't forget the anaesthetic properties as well. We'll need that when we're called on to perform emergency surgery.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/11/2010 14:43

I think water processing plants are very vulnerable to power loss.
Remember in 2007 when Tewkesburys pumping station was threatened by the floods and the huge logistics to get drinking water to people?

Thingumy · 04/11/2010 14:44

well, BBC4 is currently broadcasting from a nuclear bunker so all is well.

vintageteacups · 04/11/2010 14:44

SSS - could be an EMP blast? That would render all phone and electrical services dead for a long while.
