I've been pondering this all day. Went for a meal with 3 friends last night, the bill for wine and food was £163.80 (we did drink quite a lot of wine ). Meal was lovely and service good. We were in a local independent gastropubby type place.

How much do you think we should have tipped?

I'd top it up to £180.

10% but I may have brought it up to 180

Oh good. Thank you. That's exactly what I did. I had the bill and said it works out £45 each including tip. Seemed quite straightforward tome, but then I suddenly realised that everyone else was sniggering with horror at the huge tip. Started to feel really guilty about getting friends to fork out, but also sure that it was a reasonable tip...

I do 10% and then round it up to the nearest 5 or 10 if appropriate..

If I'm splitting the bill, then it will be 10% with it being rounded up to whatever figure we get to with people giving a round amount e.g. £1.00 or £1.50 or whatever.

£180 between you including tip seems fair.

If I;d been eating with just DD and it came to that amount (yeah, like that would ever happen!), I'd have left a tenner.

Maybe the general tipping confusion was down to the amount of wine consumed...
