Well exactly that really got a spare bit of time and I know with some of the recent ridiculous tv shows I thought I’d see if I could answer a few myths and questions. I will say my partner is a traveller I am not but am married into the community which in itself is rare

Do you like dogs?

Lol, stoppit! 😂🎬

I've always wondered how do you fit everything into a caravan? Do you have storage units aswell? Even kids toys take up loads of space, where do you keep the pram for example?

TheGander · Today 17:01

Ignore the haters OP your thread is very interesting. Why should you account for/ apologise for your life choices? Seems like you have your eyes open and are making things work for you.

They often have sheds and annexes for cooking and storage.

What did your family think the family grew up with?

Damnedidont · Today 17:12

What is the attitude of the travelling community to the 5 youths who recently died whilst attempting to evade the police and who caused the serious injuries to an innocent family? Or the 2 lads who dragged a policeman to his death?

Makepumpseleven · Today 17:12

Are you in a static or touring caravan? And if it’s static, why wouldn’t you just live in a house?

What Eww said might be mildly sarcastic, but it isn’t racist, for Christ’s sake.

I don’t think he’d ever have managed living in a house and I’m not totally sure I could now. There are SO many negatives which are often portrayed but we also have a lot of positives my female in laws are my best friends because we have each other to rely on in a way that someone who only sees them a few times a year might not. My children grew up with 20+cousins their age well ish. But I am realistic and it isn’t for everyone. Money wise we do well I guess I don’t know totally because I don’t really deal with the money. I am a bit of a rarity in that I work a few days a week in the local farm shop which isn’t allowed usually but my husband never asks me where it goes and is happy for me to do it

What is the difference living in a house to living in a permanent site?

UncannyFanny · Today 17:21

Can you tarmac my drive?

No seriously, if anyone can I’d be really grateful for a quote!

Given she is part of the travelling community and has said ‘ ask me anything’ it seems reasonable to me to ask what their views were about it.

SevenYellowHammers · Today 14:25

Why do non travellers do these things? The worst littering I ever saw was after my freshers fair.

Human feces after a Freshers Fair? - You obviously haven’t had to clean up after travellers broke into our local cricket pitch and stayed for a week.

Would your husband’s family be understanding if one of your children or their cousins was gay or lesbian?

^ I was also going to ask this question. What is life like for a gay lad or lass in a traveller community?

SevenYellowHammers · Today 17:30

Zippedydoobaah · Today 16:12

Travellers themselves say you can spot a fellow Traveller in a crowd. They have a distinctive style which appears to be quite conformist. No idea about Romany gypsies though (who aren't Travellers).
And you absolutely can tell a practising Hasidic Jew or Sikh a mile away due to their dress code. There is nothing offensive about that, it's a fact.

But what about the traveller folk, standing in the same crowd that you don’t identify because they aren’t dressed in the the stereotypical way you describe. Is that still a “fact” ?

Abhannmor · Today 17:30

My neighbour is a Traveller who appears to live apart from the father of her children. He comes occasionally to cut the grass etc. They do go travelling in the summer especially. So I suppose she is what you call a ' half traveller' or settled Traveller.

I'm quite interested in the dialect , Shelta , Cant or whatever they call it. Although I've heard it's dying out a bit . Clever how they switch letters around to disguise their meaning. So the Irish word Buachaill (boy) becomes Bloke. Is it true some Travellers are becoming Pentecostalists? I don't know my neighbour well enough to quiz her on this ! She is polite but distant.

It absolutely is racist. And I will call it out every time.

Calling an ethnic minority woman’s culture a subjugated lifestyle, saying you’d be disappointed if your daughter chose it and describing her life as a waste goes well beyond sarcasm. You can criticise individual cultural practices without expressing contempt for an entire ethnic group and the people who belong to it. THIS where it crosses into racism.

KimWexlersPonyTail · Today 17:34

Does the animal cruelty upset you and would you say anything to them?

Monty36 · Today 17:38

There have been studies undertaken and reports done which highlight the issue of domestic violence towards women in the travelling community.

Why is it that domestic violence is so prevalent?

The OP is a married to a Romany gypsy.
They are two completely different groups of people.

Abhannmor · Today 17:39

Sorry , crossed lines . You are Romani so the question about Cant is not relevant.

I wonder the same. There is a current site near us and it is absolutely disgusting and they are still in situ. Why the price inside while outside looks like an actual rubbish tip?! Having said that it would make sense for the council to make an arrangement to collect as they are inevitably the ones who have to deal with it in the end anyway. As you said though there are other options and no need for much of the destruction. Every single time I visit the shops in the area the children from the site are running wild, terrorising the staff and stealing. Watched a group around 8-9 years old steal vapes from the petrol station the other day and sit and puff them just the other side of the road. They are also causing property damage in the area and assaulting local children. TBH it’s changed my opinion as I was always under the impression they were a proud group of people and my opinion has been changed witnessing the reality!

The sites that come near us are similar. A friend of mine works in the local supermarket, and said the primary aged children kept getting sent to shoplift! Why on earth would parents do this?

BunnyLake · Today 17:41

I don’t know how Irish and Romany travellers differ (I’ve only seen the tv programmes), but why are such young marriages actively encouraged (expected?). Sixteen seems very much the norm, then lots of children soon after.

HushTheNoise · Today 17:41

Why do some travellers leave so much litter around when they leave a non official site eg playing fields? People would be less cross if they just took rubbish with them.
