Original question:
What do you think of your former PM Julia Gillard and her sneak-through of the ‘self ID’ policy (that we rejected in the UK)?

Answer:
Fair question. It is controversial but doesn't generate the same amount of active debate that I see in the UK. Other than older white males, it isnt really hotly discussed

Are the older white males the ones who want to self-id?

Catcentral · 19/08/2026 06:26

Yes. Depending on what aspect of life you're asking about

What aspect of life aren’t you happy about… Australia related?

dreamingofgoodhair · 19/08/2026 13:57

I don’t smoke but I’ve heard cigarettes are very expensive. Are there fewer people smoking now?

About life here? The fact that getting a first step into home ownership is so hard for young people. Mainly the rise of far right populist politics and the racism that comes with it

Apologist just seen clarity re what you’re not happy about

Munchie1965 · 19/08/2026 14:21

Do you think its a good thing to have Huntsmen in your house ?

WearyLady · 19/08/2026 18:49

I lived in Australia for nigh on a decade. We once had a huntsman in our house for several weeks. We called him Boris. He didn’t bother us and we didn’t bother him. One day, however, I heard a crunch as I pulled the shower door closed. I thought nothing of it until I next saw Boris, minus one leg. At that point we decided he needed to go outside for his own safety. We managed to usher him out. Poor Boris!

This is not how I would like to live 😂

Im in Qld. So dark by 5pm in winter. 7.30pm in summer. We'd love to have daylight saving

Strewth, that’s an early sunset in summer. Don’t know why I imagined it would be later- of course you’re much closer to the equator than we are. It would be a bit later in southern Australia I suppose?

applepearorangebear · 19/08/2026 22:05

Thanks for doing this - I love a country-based AMA!
What is your favourite area of Australia to holiday in?
What would be a good itinerary if you are in Australia for 3 weeks, and would Tasmania be worth a visit?
Have you noticed any signs of climate change over the years you have been in Australia?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/08/2026 22:36

I was told by Paul, at school, that Australians have to wear magnetic shoes to stay on the earth, as otherwise they would float off into space, being upside down and everything. I don't believe it as he also said he had kissed Carol and she denied it. Is it true? (about the shoes, not Carol as that really is unlikely.)

That spiders and insects really aren't that much of a big deal

Are you actually living in Australia??? It’s INFESTED with cockroaches, ants, spiders, snakes, mosquitoes, flies, possums, toads, cicadas, locusts….the list goes on!! Absolute shithole of a place! And I say that as an Australian 😂🤣🤣

Flannelfeet · 19/08/2026 23:18

Do you say G"day to people you meet?

Are there any ugly surfer men or just the super hot ones we see on telly? 🤣🤷🏼‍♀️.

dustabsorber · 19/08/2026 23:20

Fair dinkum mate. Have you ever been bitten by a spider or a snake?

dustabsorber · 19/08/2026 23:22

PS. I lived in Melbourne for a while.

I went to Cairns, they told me to be aware of the crocs and not fall asleep on the beach. Were they winding me up?

No saltwater crocs are a real danger in the north

I've seen a snake twice ever outside of a zoo/wildlife park setting

So many Brits see Australia as the grass is greener. I’m not feeling it! I have been to NZ three times, only a transit stop in Australia.
It’s not for everyone is it?

Been in Melbourne more than 50 years and none of those have ever been a problem in normal suburbia! I hardly ever see a cockroach, just your usual ants now and again , same as spiders , one every blue moon in my house , never really see a snake , naturally there will be flies and mosquitoes in summer , hardly ever see a possum , never see toads hardly, they are more in Queensland ,or locusts or cicadas hardly either , unless you go looking for them .
