Can i ask how old you are now and did you follow similar paths after school - job or go to uni etc?

I ask because my 18yo DS has a lovely GF, started dating 18m ago, knew each other as friends in a friendship/hobby group before then. Because they went to different colleges and live about 15miles apart (though their colleges are in teh same tone LOL) , GF was only allowed to come and see him one day at week at the weekend, but more in holidays. They did the same A levels, have the same interests and, by sheer fluke, have applied to the same universities (for different courses).

They are seriously lovely together and seem very committed - shared values, similar backgrounds, emotionally stable, never had a major row, dote on each other and talk on line every day even if it’s just while doing homework. I guess I worry that they will have a major dramatic break up at uni or something, so would love some reassurance that this might go the distance - well not reassurance, but some inkling into what makes a couple survive long term?

ETA see you’ve updated and are 43!

Oh sorry I misread, I thought you had been together since highschool like us.

Aww thats cute, how did you get back in touch?

I've heard some people say that they wish their child hadn't started a serious relationship at such young age, that they missed 'playing the field and having fun' which was a perspective that hadn't occurred to me - did your parents say anything similar?

We both are 35. We did long distance for 4 year's, He studied finance in UK and i was more involved in Fashion retail, it was not easy to live in different countries for 4 year's

Although our friends group was always been around us, even in uk too

One weekend is enough to see eachother, we used meet two times per month since fights were not costly

Yeah my mom always brings up this that I could have tried something in my 20s.

That’s reassuring - I am not sure whether I hope they end up at different unis or end up at the same one (in which case I can help to ensure DS is in a different Halls of residence so they are forces to make new friends in addition to having each other). They are both so grounded and have a shared friendship network which DS has known (his school) since he was 7-11years old. GF was invited in because she was a cousin/friend of someone in that group, so it’s very solid. And that group are really just such nice kids (lol all 18/19 now).

I’ve met a few people who started dating and are still together in their forties, happily. And whilst it’s not quite the same, I was a young 22 when I met my DH and we have been together 34 years, married for 24 so are planning a but do next year. GF parents are similarly LT - been together for over 25 years too, as far as I can tell, and no marital issues.

Did you both come from stable homes? Wondering whether that is a plus point for relationship longevity!

Ah, well they seem to like him - he’s invited to dinner every weekend and I think they are reassured that he’s been as focused on studying and getting into uni as GF as been. They’re a nice family, though we don’t know them well as I think we both stepped back to let the kids work it out without any friendship or differences between us muddying the water as things progress - but as a married couples we’re very similar.

Am feeling very reassured. 🥰

I know nothing is guaranteed, but I think either/both would be devastated if they split up now!

We have up and downs too, Some jealousy too....from side during my uni make Freinds. They will face that but end of the day if they love each other they will end up together

Also your push from behind matters too

Awww same here, met at 15 and now 47! Married for 21 years and together 31 years xxx

So, just so I'm not misunderstanding, it's not that you got together and stayed together from your schooldays, you broke up, led separate lives where you dated and had relationships with other people, but then got back together when you were much older?
