Not sure if this is a boring as anything but loads of people over here have expressed surprise that I’ve come alone!

Booked my flight in December to see Scotland play Brazil, and booked a cheap hostel.

Having an absolute blast! Met so many new friends - Scottish, Brazilian, American, name a country and I’ve spoken to someone from it!

I walk down Ocean Drive on South Beach and it’s like being in a wee village. Everyone smiling and saying “Hello” the constant singing, the laughing the general feeling of happiness.

This has been the best week of my life and thought I’d answer any questions from people who would like to travel solo but are not sure where to start.

Oh and I’m 60.

I’m 60 and currently travelling in Croatia alone.

I have been to Miami a few times and love it.

Solo travel is very underrated in my opinion. I hope you continue to have a blast!

Waitingfordoggo · 26/06/2026 13:08

Sounds great OP! I don’t like football so it wouldn’t be my bag, but I would enjoy the party atmosphere and the friendliness. Hope you continue to enjoy your time. I take it you’re Scottish?

My question is:

How much are the English fans embarrassing those of us who are English? I really hope most of them are managing to behave and not give us a bad name. 🙏

WorldCupMiami · 26/06/2026 13:15

Yes I’m Scottish, although live in England. I haven’t seen any English fans as they are playing in different places to Scotland.

But the press here in USA seem positive about them. No embarrassing stories and generally low key. There was a good video of an (English) journalist wearing an English top walking through an area with Scottish fans , then wearing a Scottish top and going through an area of English fans. There was just teasing and fun.

i think the media just blow up the hatred, funnily enough a bunch of us were talking about it last night. Media love a good hatred story!

Ah, of course you aren’t all in the same place (my DH is watching many of the matches but I’m not at all keeping track of who is where!) Glad to hear most people seem to be managing to behave and that the English fans aren’t letting the side down.

are there cones on the statues in Miami yet?

Arregaithel · 26/06/2026 13:35

@WorldCupMiami No Scotland, no party!😎

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 26/06/2026 13:38

Beers but no shots -a Scottish party.

I hope you’re having the best time, what a dream!
I’m 34, pregnant, 2 kids clinging off me in the heat, solo travelling sounds like a distant fantasy to me right now 😂
Have you solo travelled before?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 26/06/2026 13:57

Have you tried ranch dressing yet? My threads is full of people discovering ranch dressing and other such delicacies 😁

Hell yeah!! Of course ;)

Was a bit of an over reaction from police with blazing sirens and threats of arrests, when people were first spotted putting them on statues.

But think a mayor or someone told them all to calm down and had a picture taken of himself putting a cone on a statue.

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale I’ve seen a lot of that and found it confusing. I know it’s a US thing but it’s easily found in UK supermarkets isn’t it? I guess theirs is superior?

I’ve travelled a lot but obviously when kids were young, no solo travelling, accept a week away annually with the girls.

Top tip - When youngest is about 2 years old, take an annual mumcation with your mates!! Best thing you can do for yourself!!!

Started solo travelling again about 5 years ago, doing EDTs (Extreme Day Trips), then long weekends then long haul. South East Asia, Australia etc.

Sometimes it can get lonely, not gonna lie, but better to be somewhere exotic alone than in my living room!

Anywhere you recommend for a week solo in December before Christmas? I’m finishing a work contract and wondering if I could go somewhere and leave teens and DH - I’d like to go somewhere where I’d meet people.

Yeah! Seen this online too but nobody I know gives a shit in real life!! Hahaha

Everything seems to be served soaked in “dressing”. I mean soaked! I had a McDs egg and “cheese” bagel for breakfast and it was covered in dressing. 🤢

When I say dressing, think of mayo with half a ton of sugar in it and 20 extra preservatives!! So yeah, not going to go my way to buy ranch dressing! ;)

Yes I thought that too! I suppose if you're not aware of its existence you might not spot it. I do remember the stuff in the states tasting great - maybe I was just young and inexperienced?

Personally I loved going to the Christmas markets. For the atmosphere, mulled wine & food. A few Christmas decs etc.NEVER for gift buying.

Yes I would like sunny - doesn't need to be hot so somewhere coastal Spain or Italy or Portugal?
